Today we’d like to introduce you to Alora Tefariah.
Alora, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born in East Point Georgia, I was raised in a good home but when I was 9 years old I was diagnosed with cancer. At that age, I was too young to understand what was going on so I began to write my feelings. Those feelings turned to poetry and poetry turned to music. It wasn’t until I attended the art institute of Atlanta for film production that I found my true passion in script writing and book writing. That led me to write the book “Today was a good day: The Death” a series about a set of twins who discover they have powers and use them to infiltrate the secret society in 2012. Today, I have added two books to the series “The Truth” and “The Awakening” and also have another book coming out soon entitled “N.A.S. & B.A.E.”
While I maintain my passion and dedication to writing, I also formed a passion for speaking. Talking about the things that people are afraid to talk about or just simply never had the platform to talk about it. In this, I partnered with a colleague, Howard Johnson, and formed “Slam Radio Atl“ an Atlanta based podcast which we film live every Thursday at Live Hip Hop Daily. We also host events such as Taco’bout it Tuesday’s at Escobar every Tuesday night.
I do all of this while running my own clothing line, Baked At 420 Degrees Apparel and being a single mom of an active 1-year-old going on 25!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a very rough road filled with disappointments, failures, tears into the pillows at night, bills piling up all of that but if I have any advice for any other women on the entrepreneurial journey is stick the course. Believe in yourself and your craft and work on it daily. It’ll pay off.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a writer, author, owner, radio host, event planner and most importantly a mother. I am most proud of the fairly new journey I’m on with Slam Radio Atl. I also pride myself in my books and my creative mind that always leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting for more. What sets me aside as a writer is my ability to write about anything and still make it relatable. I can’t be placed in a box.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I never found a mentor I really just did everything myself.
