Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharell Colvin.
Sharell, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey started off working at the post office as a mail carrier. I’ve never been a person to wear a lot of makeup or makeup up at all, only lashes. I love how when you wear them you enhance your natural beauty within seconds. Ive always did my own individual and script lashes and decided to do all my friend’s lashes before going on a trip to Miami. It was kind of my friends idea for me to actually do individual mink lash extensions. They thought that it would be an awesome side hustle for me since I’ve been doing my own lashes for 10+ years.
As soon as I started doing lashes, I knew it was going to be a career and not just something to do on the side. I received joy from working with my clients. I always looked forward to my clients reaction to the extensions at the end of their service. Being able to help someone’s self esteem and help make them confident without excessive makeup everyday gave me a feeling that was so much greater than working at any job I’ve every worked on. I found my true passion. I did lashes everyday after work from 5pm til 9pm and I was available from 9am and 9pm weekends. I only worked at my 9-to-5 job for about three months before my lash clientele started booming. I had enough clients in one day to equal my weeks pay. I put in my two-week notice at my former job and here I am now, doing lashes full time and Ive even broadened my horizon and became a Licensed Tattoo /Permanent Makeup Artist.
Has it been a smooth road?
If you are looking for a career path that is a smooth road being an entrepreneur is not for you especially in the beauty industry. You will have ups and down, highs and lows. You will have times where you think that you won’t be able to pay your bills or make end meet but you will push through. You will have times where you are making so much money that you almost can’t keep up with it. My advice to young women or anyone who would like to start their journey as a lash entrepreneur is Do Not be afraid to start, stay consistent, make plans and execute. Don’t fear failure and don’t quit.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in semi-permanent lash extensions, particularly in hybrid and volume lashes, which are false lashes placed on your natural lashes one by one to give them a fuller and longer look. The procedure takes about an hour to two hours depending on which set you desire. I’m most known for my clean neat work and amazing retention, which can lasts about 3 to 5 weeks. Also I’ve learned a delicacy in applying lashes, that doesn’t cause my clients to suffer from burning, irritation or any heaviness. And of course, my outstanding personality and customer service. This sets me apart from many lash artist who don’t like creating personal/professional relationships with each client individually. I do permanent make up also known as Microblading/ Microshading, permanent eyeliner, permanent lip blush, and permanent freckles and I’m adding many more permanent makeup services.
I’ve had opportunities to work with several celebrities including Teyana Taylor, movie producers, and many others. I’ve meet and networked with a huge diversity of people from all walks of life. You never know who you will have a chance to meet in this industry. It may even open other doors for you.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Becoming a lash artist and a permanent makeup artist is definitely an opportunity that is well-positioned for many women because you are able to create your own schedule and make an unimaginable amount of money doing so. With hard work and dedication you can make a 6 figure income yearly . You’re able to live freely, to your own beat and enjoy life without being super stressed.
