Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Gordon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began competing in pageants and modeling over 10 years ago. Over time, they both grew to become passions of mine. Fast forward to 2017- I was crowned Miss South Carolina USA (becoming only the 3rd African American to do so) and went on to place Top 5 at the nationally televised Miss USA competition!
However, once you’ve been doing something for so long, it can soon become your identity. I found myself struggling with my self-worth and value outside of the industry and outside of competing. As amazing as my Miss USA experience and the different modeling opportunities I had were, I knew it was time for me to identify who I was outside of those titles. I began doing some “heart work” and truly found what I had been longing for- as far as value, self-worth, love, and recognition- in God. I found that, above all else, what He says about me is ultimately what matters. With this new perspective, I felt led to self-publish my first book to help other young women (particularly in the industry) that may be struggling with finding their true identity as well, entitled- “The Ultimate Crown: Living for the Audience of One.” Thankfully, I am still blessed to model full-time, travel the world, write for my blog and even compete! My next competition will be with the Miss World organization, so stay tuned!!!
I believe God opens doors for us all to use our gifts and talents at just the right time, in His perfect will. But, before we can fully walk in our callings- we must first make the decision to ‘live for One’ and not be consumed with what others may think about us. We must unveil our identities in Christ and be diligent in helping others do the same.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
“Smooth road” isn’t exactly how I would describe my experience with being in the pageant and modeling industries and self-publishing my book.
There were many roadblocks as there are with anything we choose to do in life. But, I’d say my biggest struggle was overcoming ‘people bondage’. Meaning, in order to do what I feel like I have been created to do, I had to get over worrying about what people thought about me or what they had to say.
Thankfully, I’ve gotten to a point where I choose daily to live my life for the audience of One and not for the opinions of this world. I am so inspired to also help other people reach that point in life that I created an uplifting Instagram page with daily reminders for people- @livingfor.one
We’d love to hear more about your business.
‘Living for One’ was inspired by the publishing of my first book, “The Ultimate Crown: Living for the Audience of One.” It is currently in its beginning stages but I believe it will be immensely impactful as we expand and continue to reach and inspire people across the globe.
What sets me apart is the reverence and honor I display for God. Wherever I go- whether it’s a modeling job, a speaking engagement, a book signing, etc. I know that I have been called to be a light in a dark place. It’s my honor to do so and my prayer is that others are inspired and transformed as well and join me on my journey.
What was you like growing up?
I had a great childhood. Very loving, nurturing. It was just my mom and I for a while so I matured quickly and always enjoyed learning from the older crowds I was surrounded by.
My mom told me I’ve always been very thoughtful and intentional when speaking and engaging with people. I didn’t really mind playing alone and I always marched to the beat of my own drum; doing my own thing, in my own time.
It’s funny because I’m the same way today!
