Meet Donovan Whitaker of DNVN WHTKR GFX in Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donovan Whitaker.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Donovan Whitaker, 26, a creative director and graphic designer in Atlanta, GA. I grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina and relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, initially to attend Morehouse College as a Business Marketing Major and have remained here in the city ever since. After being introduced to graphic design by my older brother as a youngster, I realized I had a talent in it and a passion for it. This was during the whole MySpace era. Thus, coding with HTML, making layouts, and editing photos were becoming a more commonplace custom, and I learned in on this area. I committed to the landscape of graphic design, studying the medium, and practicing daily to sharpen my skills. At the neophyte level, a period of lots of trial and error, I performed graphic design jobs for a wide range of customers before formally declaring myself as a professional after a decade of experience. However, my passion did not simply cease at graphic design. Through graphic design, I realized the significance of branding. Capturing the spirit of my generation, an energy of boldness and originality, I’ve learned to take control of my twenty-somethings. Therefore, my next step as a professional was maximizing my creative gifts. I have always boasted a passion for creativity dynamically living both a striking and innovative lifestyle. Accordingly, as I continued to serve my clients, they recognized my natural unique artistic insight and abilities and began to request services beyond graphic design. To meet their needs, this prompted me to have to expand my artistic practice area, thus beginning my vocation in a creative direction. This area is what has largely led to the most prominent opportunities that I have been able to experience as an artist.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have experienced a long and dedicated self-taught journey with design. When you have discovered your niche and realized your passion, you find that you truly love every moment of what you do. I can say that for the most part, it has been a rather smooth road, however, when you start to become more discovered and in-depth with building your brand, you have to find a way to become comfortable with constant change and evolution— more clientele meaning more organization, management, and more dedication each and every day.

Please tell us about DNVN WHTKR GFX.
DNVN WHTKR GFX, pronounced Donovan Whitaker Graphics, is a one-man Graphic Design Company based in Atlanta, Georgia that has been continuously growing throughout the years. Even though we are based in Atlanta, Georgia, we do work with clientele all over the United States and have even had the pleasure of working with a few international clientele. DNVN WHTKR GFX specializes in graphic design, branding, creative direction, and creative digital content. Over the course of 2018 and this year, we have became notorious for our Animated Motion Graphics which have appeared on numerous fashion brand’s, artist’s, and even political campaign social media outlets. As a company, I am most proud of the dedication and hard work that I continuously put in day by day in order for my company to expand and develop into the full in-house creative agency I wish to build. Being a one-man brand steadily trying to break creative boundaries by developing constant original, captivating content is what sets me apart from others. I treat each client and each project as if it was a project of my own. Even as a designer, who would want their name attached to ordinary work?

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Growing up as a child, I would remember getting home from school and hopping straight on my laptop. At that time, I had a Dell XPS. I would open up Adobe Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, MySpace, and some tutorial websites. I would charge people on MySpace to do layouts, custom Div layouts, and even photos. I taught myself how to code websites— HTML & CSS. Yes, I even had a PayPal account back then as well! From there, the rest was history. I knew my hustle.
