Kiara Gardner on Using Storytelling, Mental Wellness, and Creative Media to Build Spaces for Healing and Human Connection

By combining photography, digital storytelling, and mental wellness advocacy, Kiara Gardner has built a career centered around helping people feel seen, heard, and genuinely valued. What began through capturing powerful moments behind the camera gradually evolved into a deeper mission of creating safe spaces where honest conversations around healing, vulnerability, and mental health can thrive. Through both her creative work and Let’s Vent by Kiara, she continues to use storytelling as a tool for connection, reminding others that sharing their experiences can spark healing, build stronger communities, and empower people to recognize the strength found in their own stories.

Kiara, you’ve built both Kool Pics Photography & Visual Solutions and Let’s Vent by Kiara around a common theme of helping people feel seen, heard, and valued. How did your journey as a photographer and storyteller lead you to create a mental wellness platform?
Photography taught me that everybody has a story, even the people who never say a word. For years, I captured moments, but I also noticed the emotions behind those moments—the smiles, the struggles, the victories, and sometimes the pain people tried to hide. Let’s Vent by Kiara was born from my own healing journey and my desire to create a space where people could be honest about what they’re carrying. Whether I’m behind a camera or facilitating a conversation, my goal is the same: to help people feel seen, heard, and valued.

Photography, videography, livestream production, and digital content creation all play a role in your work. How do you use visual storytelling to create meaningful connections and impact within the communities you serve?
I believe people connect with authenticity more than perfection. Through photography, video, livestreams, and content creation, I try to tell stories that people can see themselves in. Sometimes one image, one testimony, or one honest conversation can make someone feel less alone. My work isn’t just about creating content, it’s about creating connection and reminding people that their story matters.

Let’s Vent by Kiara recently celebrated seven years and returned after a hiatus with renewed purpose. What inspired you to relaunch the platform, and what vision do you have for its future?
After taking a step back, I realized the need for safe spaces hadn’t gone away. If anything, people need them now more than ever. Let’s Vent started from a place of wanting to help people heal, and relaunching it felt like answering a call I couldn’t ignore. My vision is to continue breaking the stigma around mental health, create more opportunities for real conversations, and build a community where people know they don’t have to navigate life’s challenges alone.

You’ve worked closely with churches, nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations. What have these experiences taught you about the power of storytelling and community engagement?
I’ve learned that people may come from different backgrounds, but we all want to feel connected and understood. Working with different organizations has shown me that when people feel seen and valued, they engage differently. Community is built through relationships, trust, and shared experiences, and storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we have to bring people together.

Whether through a camera lens or a wellness conversation, your work centers on authenticity and healing. What advice would you give someone who wants to share their story but is afraid to be vulnerable?
My advice would be to do it afraid. Sharing your story can feel uncomfortable, but don’t let fear keep you silent. I used to be ashamed to talk about my struggles with depression and, more recently, my divorce. Over time, I realized I wasn’t alone.

Being vulnerable not only helped free me from mental anguish, but it also helped others see that healing is possible. Your story may be the very thing someone else needs to hear to find hope and strength.
