Today we’d like to introduce you to Aminah Anderson.
Aminah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well, it has been quite a journey. At first I never wanted to model at all, mostly because all of my life I’ve been told that I should model because of my height. I also tried to shy away from the modeling because I felt that I never wanted to be confined to one title. I felt that I was a multifaceted creative with poetry and art and music as well as being a model. In 2017, I started to mold my aesthetic by posting more photos on Instagram and writing my poems as my caption. I learned to pose by taking photos on the rear camera of my iPhone and learned to edit my own photos to help create my aesthetic as well. By summer 2018, I got over my initial fears of being labeled as a model and did my first photo shoot and I am happy to say that I did! I’m still learning but the first step of chasing anything that you love is by getting out of your own way, believing that you can do it all and not be labeled and putting your truest intents into everything that you do. As of May 2019, I officially got over my fears of being public on my Instagram and letting the whole world see what I have to offer. I still write poetry and paint as well as do makeup. Currently, I am trying to learn the algorithm and become an influencer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I had some obstacles for sure! During the time of me realizing that I should take a chance and model, no one wanted to work with me anymore because I had turned a lot of opportunities before that. I had to consistently put myself out there. I’ve tried putting myself out there for modeling agency shoots and have been turned down by every one of them. It sucks sometimes but I have to always tell myself that those opportunities weren’t meant for me and to KEEP TRYING. Just keep trying.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Aminah the sleepiest – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in writing, painting and doing makeup. I love the idea of me being a multifaceted creative that can do it all on my own. When I am at a photo shoot, the photographer doesn’t have to worry about styling me or doing my makeup. I style myself, do my own makeup and try to help bring the photographer’s concept to life. I write my poetry based on how the concept makes me feel and love sharing it with photographers if they choose to use it with their own portfolio. What sets me apart from other individuals is that I am an artist before anything else, I always have visions about what I wanna do as far as photos that I take or have taken of me, and that I will always put all that I have into my vision before it is seen or being presented to anyone that may be involved with my vision becoming a reality. I am my biggest critic.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I don’t have a company right now but I definitely can see myself selling my art in the future as well as officially creating “the slumber boy” as a brand and selling merch for that. “Aminah the sleepiest” and “the slumber boy” are my two babies and I am excited for the world to see what I have planned.
