Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuck D. Corbin.
Chuck, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been an artist my entire life, I first started in illustration, working with several mediums, from pencil, charcoal, down to oil pastels. Later in life, I ended up in a design camp at NCSU, covering all aspects of design. Architecture, furniture design, graphic design, animation, the list goes on. I particularly fell in love with graphic design, yet always had an interest in animation, and film medias. 2009, I establish my company at Tuskegee University as Koou Graphics. I would do flyers for the students there, and organizations. I was privileged enough to teach my buddy L. Carter, but since then, he’s grown tremendously. If you’re ever in Houston, TX and need media, tell L. Carter I sent ya, lol. I had been freelancing since 2009, and have been able to cover festivals, official city events, concerts, all the way down to birthday parties. I eventually added photography, and cinematography to the company and changed the name to Corbin Media. It’s been a true blessing. My talents and art has swept me into the music industry which ended up taking me everywhere in the South Eastern United States. Yet still being a media company, the corporate events must be separated from the entertainment events. Thus the “entertainer” Soundz Grate emerges. Two sides of the same coin. It’s a very interesting life to live.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was told, in order to be legendary, or be considered one of the greats, you have to have a backstory. Saying that to say this road has been treacherous, many detours, many losses, and plenty of lessons learned, media is extremely competitive. One has to be as original as possible. What makes you better? Can you work circles around the competition? Does your work speak so loudly that, you’re introduced to a client or new business partner before you even enter a room? It’s a constant, that demands to be fed.
Truthfully speaking, in any facet of business, the hardest thing is knowing who to trust, and knowing who is genuine. That is the main struggle, everyone needs media. Therefore, many hidden agendas lurk behind a smile.
Please tell us about Corbin Media.
My business is CorbiCorp which is an umbrella company and also serves as a central hub for the South East. We vary in media/marketing, business consulting, business networking, and wine and spirits. The landscape and physical health portions of the company are under redevelopment at the moment. Currently, the media department of the company is most widely known, for it literally is needed in every department of the company. What I’m most proud of as a company is the relationships we’re able to maintain with all the people in different cities and states over the past decade. I truly believe what sets CorbiCorp as a whole or even myself, in general, is that this is me. I am the product, every project is a piece of me given, and everything given is from the love of enjoying what I do. I’m not in it for the money, all of it to me is an expression, a form of art, the world is simply my galleria.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would’ve started with a team instead of being solo. It makes the difference.
