Meet Tekesia Shields of Mother’s Against Gang Violence in Fulton/Dekalb

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tekesia Shields.

Mother’s Against Gang Violence (MAG Violence) was developed May 16th, 2017 by Tekesia Shields, a mother who experienced the horror of peer pressure from community gangs and teen decisions making.

Tekesia Shields is a mother of four wonderful sons and an awesome grandmother. Ms. Shields worked over 12 years as a case manager, Educating mothers on the importance of prenatal and infant mortality prevention. Over the years, Ms. Shields has encouraged not only her own sons but several families whom lives she’s touched on a daily basis.

Tekesia Shields decided to start an organization called Mothers Against Gang Violence (MAG Violence), due to her trails of raising her own sons. Ms. shields received services and education that she felt a need to share with the community which may save lives of many youth today. After receiving honors from Atlanta Public School and Center for Black women’s Wellness, Tekesia Shields decided to walk in her destiny and plant seeds that will nourish the community

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
NOOOOO. People, community, school system, believing how can a lady with a problem child help save others.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mother’s Against Gang Violence story. Tell us more about it.
Mother’s Against Gang Violence assist with gang prevention education, by doing a TEEN TALK session at the West End Branch Library. We also conduct three Forward Thinking (What Got Me Here) Sessions at the Dekalb County Police South Precinct, Fulton Count Juvenile Courthouse, and Clayton County. MAGV also provided Students Stirring Up Success cooking competition and much more.

MAGV specialize in assisting young adults and youth with resources such as tattoo removals, second chance employment opportunities, and GED.

I’m most proud of the parents wanting to participate and the youth wanting to be helped. I’m proud of The different community agencies giving us a platform to mentor and Educate. Shout out to West End Branch Library, Dekalb County South Police Precinct/YDP youth programing, Dekalb County and Fulton County Juvenile Courthouse.

What set MAGV apart is that I’m A mother who believes in the system and the community.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The role of good luck was due to my personal life experiences with dealing with the pain of a mother gave me strength and vision to help other parents by building a business that provides resources that we understand the value of.

Bad luck was losing my son to incarceration.
