Alicia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved taking care of my skin. For years, I would watch so many GRWM videos and cleansing routines on YouTube. I would also be zoned for hours watching makeup tutorials and recreating the looks I saw on their pages. Too afraid to make my own videos. I decided to start a beauty blog to chat about inexpensive beauty supplies, new skincare products, DIY projects, and makeup. My blog was my online outlet to talk about what I loved, but I was craving more. I’ve always made my own hand-whipped body scrubs and body butters and I wanted to sell them. I sold those products locally for a year or so. I put the products on hold on until I figured out what I wanted to do.
While working as a legal assistant at a law firm full time, I enrolled as a night student at Elaine Sterling Institute. At that time, I was working towards enhancing my makeup skills to further my career as a makeup artist. I decided to sign up for the Esthetician program. Quickly, my love for skincare grew during the course of my program. The more I studied skin, my obsession for makeup was no longer an obsession. Realizing I was hiding behind the makeup, I stopped applying makeup every day and started to take care of the overall health of my skin. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy a great beat! I began to love my natural skin and transform what I wanted to change. I was fascinated with the facial machines and learning about how they can help improve your skin. It brings me so much joy taking care of people and making them feel great. Working in the spa while in esthetic school really helped prepare me for what to expect when I have my own spa.
After graduating and passing my state board testing, I opened AliciaDion Beauty Spa in Marietta, GA. I have been in business for over a year now and just relocated to another space near Marietta Square.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been smooth but it hasn’t been bad either. I would say one of my most challenging struggles has to be balancing home life and my career. Being a mother to a seven-year-old, working a full-time job and going to school at night part-time, was not easy. During that time, I missed out on a lot of things. I wasn’t prepared for a lot of the sacrifices that I had to make. There were many nights I felt like a horrible parent for missing out on my sons first year of school, not being able to read to him, go to his games. I enjoyed those things about being a parent. I didn’t realize that I would be missing out on all of that. Once I figured out how to balance the two, it became less stressful.
