Today we’d like to introduce you to Demarco Davis.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey started at L.p Miles elementary school on the westside of Atlanta after I moved from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I always would go to the barbershop and pick out the number I wanted my hair to be like but for some odd reason, it wouldn’t come out like it was on the picture, and that was because in the picture the models had waves. I was in the 5th grade when my mom bought my first brush, drurag, and wave grease (360 waves in the blue can). She told me to brush 100 times every day on each side. From that day, I brushed until my arm couldn’t take anymore. By the time I got to middle school (Harper-Archer Middle), I had the best waves a 6th grader could have. I was dedicated to being on one of those pictures one day.
Every day from 5th grade to now, I’ve been brushing my hair and having waves. It’s kind of funny because, while growing up, I was a star football player and I used to always keep my brush on me during football practice from middle school all the way up to college. I got caught in practice in high school by my coach for brushing my hair during practice and had to do a punishment called up/downs after practice because he told me football was not a pretty sport (lol). That didn’t stop me I always had drags waves and etc. From the age of 10 to the age I am at now which is 23. I started doing music like 2015 when I lost my football scholarship and people would ask me at the studio all the time what to have under that (durag) when I would show them, their reaction would make me feel like all my hard work from 5th grade to now was worth it. About a couple of months ago, I posted a video on my Instagram page (Poppyfrmda4) of me washing and styling my hair and I got great feedback. I had people telling me that I should have been doing the wave tutorial and that I was the only one who should do it because of how long I been having waves. That gave me the confidence to start a YouTube channel (poppyfrmda4) to teach people how to get waves. I got the name Mr. Wavecheck from a friend at work because a video of me going viral waving checking WAVECHECKING my fellow waver at his job the video is almost at 10k on Instagram with no promotion and I just ran with the name.
From that day, I starting wave checking random people and getting great feedback for my tutorial videos. One day, a friend of mine by the name of Chase told me that I should go to the best barber in the city by the name of Kemp because no one else knew how to cut like him (exclusive). My first cut by Kemp got me noticed by TOPWAVERS, TheCutAPP, and many more, shoutout to (@masterwiz_) for always keeping me sliced till this day. These are exclusive waves pages in America. My goal for all of this is to one day be on the front of my own drug and to own my own drug company, and also become a model for durag companies around the world.
Has it been a smooth road?
My road has not always been peaches and cream. Growing up on the westside of Atlanta with no father in the household, just my mother and siblings, I was exposed to a lot of things at a young age. From gangs, drugs, and etc. My role models where the dope boys from the hood, but I played football growing up and it wasn’t always great being an athlete in the hood, because most of my friends played sports but were gang members and there was no one but my grandparents and my mother to motivate me. I got locked up in the 11th grade for robbery and thank God, I beat the case but it humbled me and made me notice the streets don’t love you and your friends are not your friends. I got out and put my focus on playing football and school. My senior year in high school, I earned scholarships from to play division 1 football and that was a dream come true. My only problem was that I had a horrible attitude and I was a hothead because of me having no fatherly guidance. I was kicked off the football team and kick out of my mom’s house because of my ways. I lost a few scholarships but I still earned a scholarship to play football at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). My freshman season the football program at the school shut down and I was forced to come home. I was blessed enough to have an offer on the table to play at Georgia State University (GSU) and I took it. My ways followed my though, I lost my scholarship due to an altercation I had with my girlfriend at the time, but that didn’t stop me I earned a spot to play at Alabama A&M. That was the hardest decision to make in my life at the time because everything that I earned was going downhill.
When I got to A&M, I was told by the coaches that they would help me threw the process and at 19 years old, I believed every word, but that turned out to be a lie. I was granted with a $12,000 hold on my financial aid because of me not having a scholarship that I couldn’t attend any classes because of me not knowing anything about paying for classes or anything. I was stuck in Alabama and while I was there my Grandmother passed from a stroke. I felt like life was over, but I saved up some money and I found my way back home. It was a struggle coming home and hearing people tell me I was nothing without football and not being able to play the sport you loved growing up but I was motivated to make something out of nothing.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Poppyfrmda4 – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Right now, I have teamed up with a company called durag wavey and I specialize in being an exclusive waver. The company consists of durags, brushes, and many more hair products. I’m known for my funny personality, style, and hair. What makes me proud of being Mr.wavecheck and teaming up with durag wavey is that I came from nothing, I never knew something that something I started in the 5th grade could follow me for the rest of my life. What sets me apart from others and that everything I do is unique and it’s not acting, what you get is what you get, meaning it’s not written or false information, and everything I do has meaning to it.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about my city is the culture, everybody wants to be from Atlanta, but what I dislike about my city is that everyone is a wave follower, no one has their own unique way of doing things, they see other people do it and try to say they did it first.
