Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis McMillan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been drawing and creating things since I was around the age of seven. I even had a portrait and bracelet making business as a child. Art was always something I was interested in but over time I strayed away from it and decided to focus on the healthcare and athletic field. While in college, I would create gifts for people that included drawing, painting, or wood burning. It got to the point where friends, family, and my fiancé told me I should start selling my work. To be honest, it took me a while to gain the confidence in myself that people would actually buy what I made but I did it. Business has been growing ever since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I think the biggest obstacle has been making time for my business and perfecting my craft. Anyone that knows me knows that I do ALOT, so taking time to actually cater to my business has been hard. Learning how to market myself and how to price my work appropriately have also been challenging. However, those are things I’m getting better at. I’m also always learning new ways to make my business more professional and learning new techniques to become a better artist.
Please tell us about Lexpressions Art.
My business is Lexpressions Art. I make art, home decor, and gifts. I specialize in sketching, painting, wood burning, and wood carving, whether it’s grad caps, Greek paddles, rocking chairs, or wall art. I think I’m most proud of my company’s adaptability. Sometimes people come to me and ask me “Hey Lex, can you make this?” And sometimes I surprise myself when it turns out to be exactly what they wanted. I think what sets me apart is the variety of services and styles that I offer.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever thought about this. I would have to say my favorite memory is Thanksgiving of 2006. It was the one year most of my family from Mobile, AL came to our house in Atlanta (we typically went there every year). I remember having my cousins and the kids from the neighborhood in our house and everyone just having a great time. I have a huge and hilarious family so it was never a dull moment.
