Life and Work with Sunny Lee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sunny Lee.

Sunny, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always knew that I want to be an artist, but I didn’t know what specific field. When I was at scad, I took an intro to graphic design class, and that’s when I knew this is the path that I want to go to. I was fascinated with typography and layouts. And I realized that we as humans are always surrounded by some kind of graphic design. We are always exposed to ads, websites, apps, and prints such as books and packaging. I wanted to be a graphic designer that could influence what people see in their daily lives.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Design is all about ideas and brainstorming. There are always struggles when coming up with good ideas, but every idea is valuable. I learned to speak up about my ideas and how to share it with others for collaboration. I get inspired by my designer friends every day and I am trying to inspire them as well. My friends and I start small projects together. One we worked on was age magazine and it is about female artist influencer. Our goal was to tell the stories of female artists that are lesser-known in the industry to inspire other artists.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a designer. I do graphic design mainly focused on digital products such as websites and apps. I work with small start-up companies and big-name brands. I care about the relationship between design and users, and my focus is coming up with beautiful visual solution that is also practical and functional. While my design is very clean and simple, it also has unique characteristics.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My dad is an electrical engineer and I grew up seeing him drawing a lot of blueprints. He also drew illustrations for me so I can color them instead of buying me coloring books. That inspired me, and playing with coloring books helped me to understand the idea of mixing colors. I got into painting and drawing at an early age and I always wanted to become an artist. My early childhood experience helped me to become who I am now.
