Meet Martine Beher of Martine Beher Photography in Roswell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martine Beher.

Martine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started with my love of photography as a teenager. My family always enjoyed photography and kind of passed that love on to me. When I was 14 I asked my parents for a “nice” camera, so for Christmas I received a Canon EOS Rebel G. I started out taking mostly pictures of family, my dogs, trees, flowers and landscapes. I took pictures for the yearbook and went on to college where I started out with a major in Fine Arts. Unfortunately, that didn’t last long. I didn’t feel I could make any money doing what I loved, so I switched to a degree in Business Administration and started working as a paralegal at law firms. Fast forward to when I had my daughter 12 years ago. I once again became enthralled with taking beautiful, meaningful pictures and had the perfect little model in front of me. It wasn’t long before friends began to take notice and asked me to take portraits of their little ones. And from there it grew into a family photography business. Add another couple kids of my own and I decided I had to take a break and focus on my own family. It wasn’t but 2 years before I got the itch again. But this time, I had friends who were asking me to shoot their weddings. So, that’s how I became a wedding AND family photographer. I truly enjoy all aspects of photography and really enjoy learning how to shoot new things and in new ways.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been an easy road to become a full-time photographer. It has been hard to learn how to market myself and how to streamline the process so the customer service and business side of running a business works for me. It was part of the reason I took a break for 2 years before starting back up again after I had baby #3. I still struggle with marketing myself and putting myself out there for name recognition, but I am working on it and definitely making some progress.

Please tell us about Martine Beher Photography.
I specialize in organic, natural moments. There is a certain amount of posing that goes into any photograph, but what I’m looking for is that connection between people (or animals) or that emotion in their eyes. I make people feel comfortable in front of the camera, like they are just hanging out with a friend and taking pictures together. I’m really proud that when people talk of my company to other people, they refer to me as friendly, easy to work with and that my images are “amazing” or “gorgeous”. I think that’s a lot of what sets me apart, I provide a fun, easy experience for my customers, but still provide them with amazing, emotionally connected pictures.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have learned how to legitimately run a business either from a mentor or even just through books, because even though this is an art, it’s 10% being behind the camera, 90% everything else. There is a lot people don’t see and don’t realize that goes into running your own business, regardless of the type of business.
