Meet Shamere Lee of The Curl Bar Salon in Buford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shamere Lee.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shamere. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
During my high school years, I’ve always had a knack for doing hair. I would do my hair, my sisters, & friends as well. Not even thinking about going to school for cosmetology. It wasn’t until two daughters later & the year of 2007 that I decided to start my cosmetology journey. I attended Atlanta Technical College for a year & that started to become difficult driving from Gwinnett five days per week. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to finish there so I put things on hold & worked a lot. I’ve always been independent & a hard-working mom. In 2012, I decided to get back in school but at Gwinnett Tech which was a lot closer to home. I finished the cosmetology program on the dean’s list in 2014 & it was the best decision I ever made! While in school, I was an assistant & receptionist at a salon for three years plus working another job as well. Fast forward to 2016, I stepped out on faith with no clientele & started my own business. All I had was my income tax money lol but here we are three and a half years later….still going & growing! Just trusting in God & keeping the faith is what got me through.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course, it wasn’t always an easy road! I was a single mother trying to raise my girls & be an entrepreneur too. My first year in business, I marketed on Craigslist believe it or not. I would post my specials on there & my Instagram page to get new clients. I would also do hair for my friends & family as well but I knew I needed more clients to keep up with my salon rent & rent at home. My summer was quiet the first year…I remember wanting to give up. My friend told me not to give up & everything was gonna work out. I later would have friends that were referring their friends & family & their friends were referring friends too. So my clientele kept on growing!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Curl Bar Salon – what should we know?
The Curl Bar Salon is a natural hair salon located in Buford, Ga. I specialize in natural hair care for women & kids no matter the curl pattern, texture, or length. The salon is mostly known for being a kid-friendly salon servicing kids ages three & up. I wanted my salon to be different! A place where clients can feel at peace, relax, & have a few laughs without being in the salon all day. I am so proud & happy that I am still in business & booked every week. Plus I was able to move up front to a bigger salon space with an outside view. I love where I work & I have the best clients ever!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’ve always felt like I had a really great support system…my mentor, especially for giving me that extra push & advice! She prays with me & for me always! My family, friends, & daughters are so proud of me! We definitely came from the struggle & now we are doing so well. It just goes to show you that everyone has a different path, a different journey but in the end, we will make it. & its never too late to start & finish.
