Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamilla Davis.
Kamilla, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in poverty and being less fortunate made me realize that I always wanted more and to one day become successful. Every since I was a little girl, I’ve always been outgoing with a huge personality. I first discovered it when I was asked to read a Dr. Seuss story in front of my class, as a kindergartener. Yes, I was that smart, that i read in front of my class. Once I reached middle school, I started acting in stage plays and became apart of drama club. I had speaking parts and even narrated some times. Throughout the years after that, I participated in spelling bees, I always volunteered to go before my class (whether it was to speak or present) , make the class laugh, and just overall be the light that everyone needed. From those moments, I realized that I had talent and decided as a young girl that I wanted to grow up to be a motivational speaker, actress, and to be on tv one day. (at that time, I didn’t actually know what a comedian was).
At the age of 14, I lost my mother. I’m the youngest of 9 children. I knew from that moment that I would never be the same, so I had to immediately think of a way to cope with life to keep myself up and going. I had to help break the news to my nieces and nephews. Although I was dealing with losing someone so close to me, I still explained to them in such a positive way. I realized that I had the gift of inspiring.
Some times after that, One of my sisters & I started living from house to house between one of my older brothers then an aunt (one of my mom’s sisters). Nothing seemed to be joyful in doing that, so I began to read and research so that I could learn and teach myself. I practically raised myself. However, I still completed high school, graduated and received my high school diploma in May 2012.
After high school, I went straight into college, Mississippi State University (the biggest university in the state of Mississippi) at the age of 18, that following August 2012. After going through so much in life growing up as a child and through my teen years, I knew I wanted to attend and complete college so that I would have opportunities in hopes of succeeding one day.
In 2015, while in college I made my first video and posted it to my Facebook page. It gained 1k views and everyday after that my Facebook friends asked for more. I posted more daily. The numbers went up and I reached over 11,000 views on one of them that caught a lot of attention. I gained over 2,000 followers on Facebook in addition to the 5,000 friends I already had. That’s how I became a comedian. I began posting funny and motivational videos. Throughout college, I experienced eviction, starvation, lack of support, extreme finance problems, no transportation etc, but I kept going. I also had the opportunities of interning at a local radio station as an on-air personality, protege, and as a news reporter at a local news station. My voice became better and I grew as a person.
I graduated college in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Communication/Broadcasting). Just to mention, I’m the last of 8 children, but the first to go to a university and obtain a bachelor degree. I posted my graduation picture and apart of my story from college. It went viral on the internet. I received a flood of direct messages from supporters and fellow college students reaching out for advice. I became a motivational speaker from sharing my story.
In June 2018, I left Mississippi and came to Atlanta, GA alone with $100 to my name and a dream. That was the only money I had left from graduation. I had no definite place to stay when I made it here. A friend that I met in college was here before me so I slept in her room on the floor on an air mattress. I got my first job in Downtown Atlanta as an In Room Dining Cashier at one of the hotels downtown. A month after having the job, I moved into a house where I paid to rent a room. While working for 11 months I never had the time to chase my dreams of acting and comedy so I left the job in May 2019.
I did my first paid background acting in June 2019. I also did my first stand up comedy set at open mic night at 707 Comedy Lounge in Riverdale, GA in the month of June. At the end of July 2019, I became homeless and slept in my car in Walmart parking lot for almost a month before signing a lease for my own place. I also performed a set in Birmingham, AL and at Seven Sports Bar & Lounge where I met Comedian Henry Welch. I’ve been on a few other casting sets as well.
From those experiences, I became resilient and knew that I had gone through enough to use during my comedy sets. I came to Georgia to make a change, to inspire others to go after their dreams, and to find myself even more while pursuing my career in the entertainment industry.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I’ve struggled throughout my whole journey of trying to become successful. First of all, I would like to say that I wouldn’t trade going through these obstacles for anything because if it wasn’t for the troubles, I wouldn’t be the woman that I am today. I’m not as close to my family as I used to be because of the lack of support and encouragement. I had to distance myself in order to make changes. I even lost close friends in the midst of these challenges. Financial issues played a major role in my downfalls because I hardly ever had any money to take professional headshot photos to send to different talent agencies , to travel to different places to make face to face connections, or to just be financially stable long enough to make ends meet to get started. In addition to financial issues, I became a little discouraged because I had no backbone or someone to push me so that’s when I became self motivated. As I stated before, I experience homelessness, starvation, etc. The road hasn’t been easy, but it has been worth it because I found my strength and became stronger than I’ve ever been.
Tell us more about your work.
I am an entertainer. I’m a comedian, actress, and motivator. I specialize in telling jokes. I joke and laugh a lot beyond the stage. I’m also known for my outgoing personality and bright smile. Many know me because of my inspiring testimonies and stories that I’ve shared. I’m most proud of myself because I can get along with just about anyone. I’m not ashamed to converse with others or afraid of the stage. The way that I think sets me apart from others. I think outside of the box too and that’s how I come up with my jokes.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I can see my industry going far in the next 5-10 years. I will gather other comedians and start a comedy club. It will be a very unique group of women and men who enjoy making others laugh and traveling from state to state. I will ensure that it’s unique and trendsetting.
What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
My plans for the future is to become a successful entertainer, motivational speaker, and financially stable so that I could be in a position to help others and give them opportunities. I’m looking forward to being on the big stage making people laugh into tears and to inspire millions one day. I’m planning and preparing myself for greatness. There are people who are depending on me. I’m going to make big changes by leaving all parts of my comfort zone, facing my fears, and breaking generational curses. I will continue to walk in my purpose and do what God has called me to do.
