Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Tall.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Samantha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all started my sophomore year at Emory University where I decided that I wanted to pursue modeling as well as a career in medicine. I had never done a photoshoot but one of my friends wanted to test out his new camera so I decided to be his muse. I received so much positive feedback and really enjoyed what I was doing. I started off as a freelance model and did not make much.
There aren’t very many moments that I felt like I was living in a present moment while in college aside from modeling. It was my saving grace, however I had always been camera shy and mediocre STEM wise but by doing these two passions I discovered myself along the way. I knew that I wanted to go into medicine because I enjoy helping others in the most selfless way possible. When I first got to medical school, I was super intimidated by how brilliant everyone was. I ended up failing my first test and had severe imposter syndrome. My resiliency pushed me to continue my medical education because I knew I was embarking in medicine for the sake of saving patients. As time went on, I became better at school, regained my empathy and even landed a summer internship with Harvard Medical School. My future goals are to become an Emergency Medicine Physician that also has some background in health policy and advocacy. I also hope to continue professionally modeling, advocating for body positivity and showing young adolescences that you can save lives through science while having fun.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was never a smooth road and it still is not. I was rejected from mostly every modeling agency because they considered me too fat, not pretty enough or that I had too much acne. It made me super depressed to know that going to they gym twice a day and adopting a restricting diet to where my ribs were showing was still not enough. I started from scratch using model mayhem and had no car. I used to take the MARTA two hours each way to work with photographers to work on my portfolio and increase my knowledge. My parents at first were skeptical of the modeling because they did not want it to get in the way of pursuing medicine but now they are my biggest supporters. It was the same in terms of medicine. I had attained great grades in school. However, I had test taker anxiety and did not do well on standardized exams. For that reason my medical school application journey was very hard and daunting. A lot of people told me I would never get accepted into medical school especially on my first application cycle because of my MCAT score. I felt super discouraged. Through it all, I was able to mentally get through it all and succeed by being my biggest fan and also leaning on my faith in Christ, family and friends.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Red Head Med – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
What sets me apart from most models is that I am pursuing an MD and am establishing a YouTube channel dedicated to promote healthy lifestyles in two career fields that have known to be stereotypically toxic. It’s called Red Head Med. What I am most proud of is my ability to have remained faithful to the Lord above and to create for myself my own world while being authentic.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Atlanta’s diversity, nightlife, colleges and the food! One of my favorite places I’ve ever ate was Nut Cafe and I’m not even Vegan but honestly if all vegan food tasted like that, I might change my lifestyle. What I least like about it is the gentrification and traffic.
