Meet Jacob Stagnaro of Boom Therapy in Kirkwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Stagnaro.

Jacob, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was well on my way into a stable and comfortable career in physical therapy when, less than two years out of physical therapy school, I decided to quit my job and open my own clinic.

I graduated with my doctorate in physical therapy from Georgia State University in 2013. I knew shortly after graduating that I wanted to complete a residency in orthopedic physical therapy but my wife and I couldn’t afford it straight out of school. As a compromise, I ended up taking a job for a large company with an agreement that I would work for one year and complete a residency the following year on their dime. One year later, I was accepted into the orthopedic physical therapy residency program and Emory University and scheduled to graduate in August of 2015 – exactly two years after graduating from physical therapy school.

About mid-way through my residency, with a pregnant wife, no money, and almost no experience, I decided I should quit my job and open my own practice as soon as I graduated in August 2015. To my utter astonishment, she agreed with me and we were off.

Over the next 5 months, I shared my concept for Boom Therapy and we began the work of creating the business. We designed Boom Therapy to be a simple way for people to access high-quality physical therapy. We built an online exercise program with videos to make doing home exercises simple and intuitive. We designed the clinic to be minimalistic and to utilize equipment that could easily be replicated at home. We set up a website that allows patients to schedule their own appointments, complete their paperwork and pay for their appointments.

On July 14, 2015, Boom Therapy opened its doors, on August 1st, I successfully graduated from my orthopedic residency, and on September 1st, our first son Luca was born. Since then, we have grown Boom Therapy organically, all through word of mouth. Our model has remained the same – to provide one-on-one high-quality physical therapy.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has certainly not been a completely smooth road. I think with any new business, there are going to be challenges. Some of the struggles along the way have been strictly business and others have been personal. The business struggles are pretty easy to manage – issues with how to price, when to start marketing, how to identify target market – things like that.

On the personal side, the struggles have been more difficult – what happens to me if this fails, how do I separate business success and failure from personal success or failure, how much of my personal money should I invest- the more personal stuff is a constant struggle but also makes it much more than just a job – which is really rewarding and fun.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Boom Therapy story. Tell us more about the business.
Boom Therapy is a premium one-on-one physical therapy company. We specialize in manual therapy, trigger point dry needling and diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic injuries. We work with all types of athletes from high-level triathletes to casual weekend warriors. Our model for physical therapy is designed around simplicity, quality and honesty. All sessions are one-on-one with a doctor of physical therapy and in-clinic treatment is always paired with a personalized online exercise program to ensure success.

I am most proud of the success of the model – it was basically a proof of concept to see if patients would respond well to minimalistic clinics, online exercise programs and one-on-one in-clinic treatment and it has been incredibly successful.

There are a few big things that set Boom Therapy apart from others:

  1. Our model – every visit is one-on-one with the therapist.
  2. Our clinic – we are not your typical physical therapy clinic, we are designed to be minimalistic so that all the exercise we do in the clinic, can be replicated at home.
  3. Our method – combining in-clinic treatment with personalized online exercise programs.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think good luck has played a significant role in both – being and entrepreneur, I believe means you’re choosing what you do for work – that is something only a very small percentage of people can do. I feel lucky just to have the chance to try.
