Today we’d like to introduce you to Cam Johnson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cam. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Honestly, I had dreams of playing ball. I quit my senior year of high school and didn’t have a clue to what else I was good at. Then one day in class I was asked to draw someone’s tattoo idea up for them. I usually only drew my own which wasn’t anything spectacular. Off that drawing, I made $15. Soon after I was drawing for professional athletes and realized that I could make a living off of art. I went off to college but that didn’t last long—dropped out in three months. As soon as I got home, my main focus was to become a tattoo artist. I didn’t know what, when, or how I was going to do it but I knew I had to make it happen. One of my mentors (@livelovetattoos_atl on IG) is who influenced me to start. I was doing them out of my mom’s house and my name started to spread throughout Greenville, SC. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to become a professional tattoo artist and this is where the story line continues.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road and I can honestly say it still isn’t. I’m a self taught artist who also worked a full time job. There were nights when I only got two hours of sleep because I’d be up trying to perfect my craft. I’d tattoo myself just to see how my machines worked with different needles. I was juggling between work and tattoos. I was exhausted but I knew that if I wanted to get somewhere I had to put the work in. I’ve spent over $3000 on machines due to my lack of experience. I was so discouraged by that to the point that I almost quit tattooing altogether. I gave it a break for five months. I got back to it when I was asked to come to work in a shop in Spartanburg, SC. I’m forever grateful for my mentors, Marcus and Allexx, who has allowed me to continue my passion.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a tattoo artist that specializes in illustrated, black and grey. I’m known for my story. It’s genuine and real. I’m most proud of the fact that I never gave up on myself. Although it’s been a tough journey, I persevered. I think what sets me apart from others is my vision. I dream so big it’ll be too much to put into words. Of course, being successful is the goal but ultimately I want to give back.
