Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Rita Deattrea Beckford, M.D.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Beckford. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After being clinically obese for most of my adult life and then gaining and losing more than 70 pounds not once, not twice, but three times; I wanted to help not only my patients but as many people as possible to win the war on weight loss! As a physician, I know how powerful losing weight and maintaining it can be for one’s health. To be able to share my journey with others has been an absolute joy. The Beckford Formula manual is a book designed to help people lose weight and keep it off for good. This year, I celebrate over five years being able to manage my pre-diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure with only nutrition and exercise.

This past year was monumental as I was able to tone my body and felt comfortable wearing a bikini for the FIRST time ever in my life. I love speaking at events and encouraging others to go after all of their dreams. If I can lose over 80 pounds and wear a bikini, pretty much the sky is the limit for each and every one. Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggles for me have been work/life balance. I love my family. I am married with two sons and I enjoy spending time with them. I also love people and working out! I love cycling and speaking. It is hard to find time to do everything and we are all so busy. I find myself often wishing I could be two or three places at the same time. so far, technology hasn’t figured it out yet. so, I make the hard calls. My kids will remember if I am not at one of their special events. I can not miss it. Work outings usually suffer. If I am asked to speak to a large audience about health, weight loss or success, those are my passions, so I try to accommodate these events. Fortunately, my husband is very chill and laid back, we have been together for over 25 years, he enjoys quiet dinners with me and a movie. Working out in the wee hours of the morning has made been life changing. There are very few distractions and competing events at 5 a.m.

Please tell us about your practice.
I am a board certified physician. I am holding two certifications, family medicine and obesity medicine. I have my medical licenses in all 50 states (and D.C )and see patients virtually in all of them. Prevention is my specialty. I am the author of the weight loss manual, The Beckford Formula, Lose the Fat for Good. What sets me apart is that I have walked the walk, not just talk the talk. I believe I am the only doctor on the planet to lose over 70 pounds not once, not twice but three times and I never gave up! This allows me to empathize and connect with patients. If I could do it, they can too! I also love being able to boast about the thousands of lives I have impacted with just diet and exercise. Sure, I am trained to manage illness with medications and I do when necessary, but how many doctors can say they have spent half of their career getting people to work out and eat healthier? I just love what I do! I am also a certified cycling instructor and guest teach for special events. I teach healthy cooking classes. One of my proudest moments besides wearing at bikini for the first time last summer was being a special guest on the Dr. Oz show to discuss what I have learned about weight loss and preventing diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Coach/trainer- Steven Dean- helped me lose over 70 pounds and wouldn’t let me settle for good. Pushed me to have abs.
