Today we’d like to introduce you to Darryel Hunter.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I watched my mothers’ passion for hair. As a child, I would play in my sister and cousin’s hair, and even mine. I wanted to have that same passion my mom had when she started. In my junior year of high school, I started a two-year cosmetology program. I became more and more intrigued in making someone feel beautiful just by doing their hair. At 16, I got my first job ever assisting a cosmetologist, Shayla Griffin (@sgmilkshake on IG). She became my mentor and contributed to everything that I know! On my days off, I started doing hair out of my mom’s apartment, by just doing $25 silk presses.
I got plenty of practice in by assisting a stylist, being in cosmetology and doing hair at home. I got better and better! I graduated high school, received my cosmetology license, and worked as a stylist/assistant at Omni Rootz (where I am currently working). My clientele grew so fast, I had to stop assisting and became my own boss at 18. I feel like I have definitely accomplished A LOT at the age of 20, but I know greater things are in store for my future.
Has it been a smooth road?
This road wasn’t smooth at all but I wouldn’t change it. The biggest challenge was trying to balance work, highschool, cosmetology school, and also my social life. I would get off really late some nights, forgetting homework assignments. Sometimes I would not go to school the next morning because I would be so drained. School became less of a priority once I started making money from assisting and doing hair at home. I knew I had to graduate, so I did what I needed to do to pass, but it was the bare minimum.
College wasn’t an option for me because I knew I could take off in the hair industry. All of my time went towards me, creating my future to be one of the best hairstylists in my area. I had a plan and I had to execute it because I felt like that was the only option for me.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with StylesandBrowse – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
StylesandBrowse is my brand. I came up with the name while making my business page on Instagram. It shows you the creativity of my brand as you are browsing through my page. My slogan “Be a Sequin in a World of Khaki” means when you sit in my chair, you will stand out from everyone! My goal is to make every client feel the most beautiful they’ve ever felt and also to make their hair as healthy as ever!
Although I am most known for my silk press services, I also specialize in anything involving the natural hair, such as color, cuts, natural styles, loc maintenance, and I also give out relaxer services. I am most proud of my professionalism and education. I give my clients all the information they need to know about their hair to make sure that we work as a team to maintain their healthy hair. What sets me apart from others is my story, seeing where I came from & where I am now! My dedication, hard work, and loyalty to my craft is what have gotten me where I am today!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Greenville, SC is a great city to start your career. The support from others when starting something is amazing! The city continues to grow daily. What I least like about it is, to be the most successful you would have to move away. The city is so small that you will only get so far.
