Conversations with the Inspiring Maria Corry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Corry.

Maria, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a mother of four amazing little blonde girls, and I am married to an incredible man. We have been together since our senior year of high school! Shortly after graduating, we got pregnant with our first and then we got married! A little after a year of being married, my husband joined the military and we have lived in five different states within the last few years. Also, you may have seen my family on the current airing season (season 8) of Supernanny!

Growing up, I was also into arts and crafts. I loved painting and still do. I love colors and trying to see how others perceive the world along with myself. I used to write my own song lyrics in my head as a child (Nowhere near a singer though… my voice is horrible!) I have just always been so creative. It wasn’t until I picked up a cheap Canon Crop-scensor camera two years ago that I realized I could create art with a camera. I was playing around with it more for fun, and my friends kept telling me I needed to do it for a business. I shot around with it a little last spring and had so much fun. During the summer, my husband was gone for work and I went to be with family in Florida. (We are originally from the Seminole/Tampa Bay Area of Florida.) I ended up putting my “business” on the back burner just because I never got real serious about it. Then to follow, my family and I were cast for Supernanny and after filming that I got even more pushed back from trying to start my business. It wasn’t until around this last fall, something hit me and I was like… I need a camera. I need to do this! My husband and I invested into a nice camera and lens and a MacBook and we made it work! I started shooting with boudoir, to Christmas minis and I have been building on from there! I am really proud of where I have gotten.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has been a journey of ups and downs, no doubt. I always am comparing myself to the best of the best. I have wanted to quit because I can’t get the right look or just always doubting that my work isn’t great because it doesn’t look like the others. I have amazing friends and family who support me. I have joined some amazing Facebook groups who support each other and that have made me feel like a great photographer. I suffer from severe anxiety and depression. In fact, I have almost quit my business several times but I see a therapist who has changed my life.

If I had any advice, it would be to not compare yourself to others. If you have others being mean, use their energy to fuel your fire to do better and learn more. Surround yourself with supportive people ONLY.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a photographer, and I try to capture the true, raw emotions. I love to capture “in between the poses!” I love the ones where everyone’s laughing, or just looking at each other. I love saying funny prompts to get couples and families laughing. For example, my go-to is always “whisper in your partners ear your favorite food in your most seductive voice!”

Pretty much all of my reviews say that I make feel people feel comfortable or beautiful. I always try to come up with the best and most creative ideas for pictures! I shoot with bold vibrant colors and love that I am one of the only in my area that does shoot like that!

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Growing up and loving art, I knew I had to do something that let me be able to create magic. I have such incredible, supportive parents who have always encouraged me to go for what I want. I also dream of being a nurse someday, but for now with four young kids, photography is perfect for me.
