Today we’d like to introduce you to Reisha Bullock.
Reisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up in New Orleans, Louisiana, I knew I wanted to see the world. I knew I was suppose to be or do something bigger than myself yet, not fully knowing what that could be at a younger age. I lost my father at the age of twelve. I remember reading the mail to my grandmother because she was illiterate. I remember my mother taking me to Stallings Park every other day, teaching me how to dribble a basketball until I finally figured it out. Tears would run down my cheeks because I could not understand at the age of 12 why she was so hard on me. She taught me everything she knew about the game of basketball. She taught me GRIT, tenacity, grace, and HUSTLE! The following years to come, I received a full basketball scholarship to college. I then knew why at the age of 12, she was so hard on me. She wanted something bigger and greater for me long before I could ever have wanted it for myself. Now in hindsight, I wanted to create something for my children.
This is for all the little girls feeling stuck and lost while they are journeying on. This is for all the little black girls that rarely see other girls that look like them in successful positions. I have always had a strong sense for scents. I’ve always wanted to smell my best throughout the day. I always took pride in how my home smelled. Scent has always been important to me. Candles have always been a major piece of my everyday life. For years I played with the idea of making my own candles, but with fear and very little money, I never stepped out on faith to just go for it! Then Covid-19 happened. My perspective changed drastically. I no longer wanted to play with the idea of having my own candle business. I wanted to HAVE my own candle business. So with research, support from my family and friends, I started doing the work. The rest is history!
Has it been a smooth road?
I am a firm believer that anything worth having doesn’t come easy. Of course, I have had a few struggles along the way, but nothing that will stop me from obtaining my goals. With anything new comes the unknown. Will consumers like my candles? Will I get the support I’m looking for from my peers? Will my candles be loved the way I have loved making them? Listen, every thought you can think of as a first-time business owner, you will think it. What has helped me tremendously with my thoughts and emotions throughout this process is knowing that this is so much bigger than me! I am understanding more and more how to celebrate even the smallest of victories!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am small business that specializes in making luxury soy wax candles. My candles are made for everyday use and every moment you wish to make special. I believe that your home should be complimented with beautiful scents that will not interfere with your health and wellness due to toxic carcinogens. My candles are 100% soy wax with added pure essential oils for fragrance. Every candle is hand-poured and made with love. I am most proud of making a product that will not only compliment the home but also add an extra amount of love to everyday life as well as special occasions. Just imagine for a second, walking into a room that is filled with a scent that is undeniably delicious. Wouldn’t that add a smile to your face? Wouldn’t that add a sense of relaxation to your mood? I know it has for me! So I have made this product, especially for the moments when you want to just relax and calm your spirit.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is the place where you chase your dreams no matter the magnitude. This is the perfect place for businesses like mine. No matter the movement, no matter the setbacks, Atlanta will always continue to grow so what better place to grow through your process of starting your very own business?! For anyone just starting out here, I would recommend them to be as resourceful as possible. Nothing is wrong with asking for help or advice. Rome wasn’t built in day so have patience with yourself and know that you lack absolutely nothing!
