Meet Onnie Sanford of Paleo Num Yums in Augusta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Onnie Sanford.

Onnie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After my second child was born, I had very low body image and self-esteem. I decided to make a change in my exercise routine which led to a drastic change in my eating habits. I met with a nutritionist and really learned what foods worked for my body and health. As friends and family started noticing, I cooked extra meals and sold them for extra money. I never intended on starting a business, much less a meal prep company in Augusta, but here we are five years later. I created a customizable meal prep company based on desires that I wished were available when my husband and I were starting our health journey. The biggest was a strong customer service base. We started inside of the gym we attended and in 2018, moved into our own storefront. Changing your eating habits can be a daunting task that many get frustrated with and unfortunately give up. I felt that my journey and my physical change showed people that while I understood that life gets in the way, I was also showing them that you can be successful. Now we have a thriving meal prep company, our children are very involved, and we help all of our clients gain confidence, self-esteem, and their life back.

At this time, we are one of the only true, customizable companies that allow clients to have such a large part in the creations of their meals. Not only can you place your weekly order, or have a standing weekly subscription for meals, but we have a fully stocked grab and go within our store.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all. Since I had no intention of starting a business, I felt I did everything backward. I did everything by myself for a long time, which taught me a lot, but usually at a cost. I eventually got a financial advisor and a sales coach that I learned so much from. Knowing the seasons, marketing, and sales was a challenge. Doing everything on a start-up budget was even more difficult. The bumpiest road was and still is employees. Especially for the level of customer service that we strive for, finding team members that fit our vision is hard.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Paleo Num Yums – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We are known for our oatmeal cream pies! That is our most popular side item, but we do have a ton more. Our subscription service is amazing…clients choose which plan they want, the quantity of meals, how many ounces of protein, then they get to choose the foods that they do not want in their meals. Not only is this what we are most proud of, it is what sets us apart from any other meal prep company. We pride ourselves in the level of service we offer to our clients. Greeting with a smile, calling them by name, going that extra mile for them. Our team wants to make sure that their health journey is as enjoyable as possible.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I would like to grow into a larger facility, possibly offering shipping…not on everything, but some of our products. Everything that we do know, all the protocols and policies we make is for the possibility of franchising. I love to educate, I am a nurse by trade and I think that the human body is amazing. We don’t just tell people what to eat or how much to eat, we like to give them the why’s too! Right now, we are perfecting the store we have now and working on a team member training procedure.
