Meet Shira Benson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shira Benson.

Shira, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My artistic interest was sparked early in my childhood, largely influenced by my Uncle Coyt Benson, an abstract artist, and my Grandmother Bessie Benson, a local seamstress. I quickly developed a passion for art and fashion with the inspiration of my family and community. I began creating my own drawings and hand-sewn clothing at the age of seven. Whilst attending high school, I was given the opportunity to enroll in several advanced sewing and art classes. In the summer of 2003, when I turned 13, I started her first internship at a bridal boutique in Salisbury, North Carolina. In 2008, I participated in my high school’s first ever art exhibition and created my very own Prom dress.

After graduating high school, I attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where I studied Visual Arts and Fashion Merchandise. My first fashion show took place in my hometown, Badin, North Carolina, in 2010 with the help of the John Westbrook Community Center. I graduated in 2012 earning a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts and Design and shortly thereafter launched Designs by Shira Benson, my fashion label in 2013. As of early 2020, my fashion designs and artwork have been featured in various showcases in North Carolina, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Georgia, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Dallas, Texas.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In 2014, I participated in my first festival, the Heritage Festival, which took place at the UNDERGROUND in Atlanta, GA. I was the youngest exhibitor and the work was a bit overwhelming because I immediately went for the opportunity once I was called. I’m all about challenges, and I got accepted. I had just moved to Atlanta from North Carolina, and I struggled financially with the amount of inventory I needed to produce for a crowd of over 30,000 people.

I had only been in Atlanta, Georgia for five months so I decide to start a GO Fund Me to expand my support and the expansion of my business as I embarked on a new journey in Georgia. My Go FundMe raised over $500 in which I used every penny to participate in ATL’s Heritage Arts and Soul Festival.

The premier of “Designs by Shira Benson” in Atlanta, Georgia for the first time was the best debut EVER!!! I was the youngest amongst 45 vendors to participate in the Heritage Festival. I was praised by her older peers and inspiring to the youth. Designs by Shira Benson had so much to offer at this event! I offered custom made apparel, hand painted artwork, and not to mention, my self-published coloring book entitled “R E D C L A Y”. Now that’s how you turn your dreams into your reality!
