Meet Kimberly Gordon of Kissed Hair By Kim in Sandy Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Gordon.

Kimberly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a second-generation hairstylist, I knew at a very young age that I had a passion for hair. I’ve always expressed myself through hair and fashion. I’d often stay long hours at the salon while my mother worked, that is where my interest peaked and I knew for sure I would be a hairstylist. My mother noticed my passion and supported it.

Shortly after finishing high school in 2003, I entered the Master Cosmetology program. Due to unforeseen circumstances unfortunately, I was unable to complete the program. I went straight into the workforce, working tirelessly dead in jobs for years I was left feeling unfulfilled. In 2011 I enrolled back in Cosmetology school at Georgia Career Institute. I successfully completed the program in 2013. Upon completion, I immediately went to State board, passed and received my Master Cosmetology License for the state of Georgia. After acquiring my license, I immediately began working and perfecting my craft.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I definitely have and still do struggle with a lot of different things. Starting out no one tells you how challenging it is trying to build a stable clientele. Fresh out of school, I was an eager beaver. Ready to work in a salon, not knowing that people are sometimes hesitant to go to the new stylist, so a lot of days I just sat at the shop watching others work. However, I used that downtime to watch other stylists and their different techniques and learned and asked as many questions I could. So it wasn’t all bad.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kissed Hair By Kim – what should we know?
Kissed Hair by Kim specializes in healthy hair whether relaxed or natural. Most clients reach out to me for short cuts. 90% of my clientele has or wants short hair. I’ve coined my haircuts as the “Kissed Cut”. I’m most proud of my cuts for the simple fact that I left hair school only knowing how to trim. So years of practicing, taking classes, trial-and-error I feel like I can comfortably cut and give my clients the look they want to the best of my ability. I pride myself on being warm and inviting to all current and future clients. I try to make my clients feel as comfortable as possible to have open dialogue so we can get an understanding and they leave feeling confident and happy.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My determination is a huge factor in where I am. No one can tell me what I can and can’t do. Once I’ve made up my mind on what it is that I want to do, please believe its gonna get done. I just truly believe in myself and my capabilities. It’s so rewarding to do what you were born to do, be creative and get paid for it. Now that’s SUCCESSFUL!!!
