Today we’d like to introduce you to Zuri Edwards.
Zuri, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Since I was young, I have always had a passion for planning and organizing events. My mom jokes with me because as a child, I would start planning my next birthday celebration the day after my birthday. Over the years, I have planned and executed several events such as proposals, engagement parties, bridal showers, family reunions, formal banquets, social gatherings, bachelorette parties, religious and cultural programs, festivals, weekend trips, and a host of other things. Event planning was a hobby for me because I enjoyed doing it, but it wasn’t until friends, family, and even strangers complimented my work that I realized that event planning could be so much more! They encouraged me to take a leap of faith to start my own business.
I started doing research on event and wedding planning and immersed myself in the literature, photographs, and endlessly Pinterest boards. It was all I could think about, all I could focus on. I knew that this was my calling; this was my passion. I look back now and laugh because it’s funny how life comes full circle. The same enthusiasm and love I had for planning my parties when I was younger, is the same feeling I get to this day when I’m planning events. I love bringing people together and creating unforgettable memories. My soul fulfillment comes seeing other people enjoying themselves, smiling, laughing, and living in the moment.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business is no easy task. I use the same philosophy that my professors told me when I started my Ph.D. program and applied it to building a business, “This is not a sprint, this is a marathon.” So far, there have not been many challenges. I am pretty organized, so I like to keep a checklist, record, and calendar of things that need to be completed so I can stay on tasks and make everything business-wise is up-to-date. I think the biggest challenge for me has been finding a good balance between my managing my business and everything else I have going on, such as school, work, and my personal life. The COVID-19 pandemic has also been a bump along the way because a lot of events and weddings have been postponed and/or canceled, which has impacted business revenue. However, I’m using this time to build my brand, clientele, and grow my business, so this pandemic is over Events by Zuri will be ready to take off at full speed. We’re turning lemons into lemonade!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start all over again, I think I would have started Events by Zuri years ago and began the process a little sooner. I look back and see how much time has past because I was hesitant about starting a business. I was so fearful of failing and the unknown that I refused to trust myself and my purpose. Another thing I would have do differently is not be consumed with my competitors and how I measure up to them. I lost sight of my goals when I worried about others and what they were doing. I realized that this my journey, my race, and nobody can deter me from the course except for me.
