Meet Rome Williams of Rome’s Unique Styles in Statesboro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rome Williams.

Rome, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am Rome Williams. I am a 34-year-old African American entrepreneur. I started out doing hair at the age of 12 years old. I’ve been in business for three years now. 2016 cosmetology graduate. I served my community before I became a master cosmetologist. I started doing hair as a way to provide extra income for my children and I. Then it became a full-time job. A lot of my clients had traction alopecia and I wanted to make sure that I was treating their hair properly so, that it would be healthy and start growing, so I started making my own hair care products for myself as well as my daughter. I even started using it on my clients. As their hair started growing, I began to share the results with other clients and via social media and the demand became greater for my products.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth ride. Getting my product line into local beauty supply stores wasn’t easy. Coming up with reasonable prices, coming up with the right formula. When I had my baby girl, and she was born with no hair. I knew it was something I could do, so that’s when I started testing different products on her hair to see if they would work on her hair and nothing was working the way I wanted it to. So that’s when I decided to create my own products to see if they would work on her hair. I saw a difference in my daughter’s hair as well as my hair immediately.

Please tell us about Rome’s Unique Styles.
Finding the need to have a product that was safe for my daughter’s use and gentle enough to help with hair growth, I developed my hair blossom grease and growth oil. Once I started seeing results, I saw the need to introduce my products to my clients and the people in my local area. After I started getting positive feedback and results from my clients and customers, I began to introduce my product line to local beauty supply stores and beauty shops around the area. My products are sold at U.S. Hair Too Beauty Supply Store, Tru Hair Palace Beauty Supply Store, and The Herb Shop in Statesboro, GA.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
As a child, I’ve always wanted to be a hairdresser. I never really knew what all it took. I just knew one day I wanted to do it. I started doing my own hair ever since I was 12. I knew I was pretty good, because of how many 12-year-olds that you know does their own hair? Not too many. I’ve always had a passion for hair now, I’m a master cosmetologist with my own product line.
