Meet Alexis Reeves

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Reeves.

Alexis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started when I was in the 5th grade. I grew up in Coconut Grove, Florida. Coconut Grove is where all of the Bahamians that came to build Miami settled with their families. I was inspired by a lot of people around me, including my cousin, Avonda Jackson. She taught me how to hustle and earn money as a woman entrepreneur. I took the qualities of serving my community, learning how to handle customers and learning a way to provide for my family.

One day in the 5th grade, I won a math contest and the teacher allowed us to pick from a bag of goodies. I chose a roll of film. I learned how to take photos and process the roll of film in the darkroom. From then, my passion grew and grew. In the 10th grade, I served the yearbook at Palmer Trinity to work as the Deputy Photo Editor while matriculating at Florida A&M University. In 2006, I began my own photography business. As a business owner of 14 years, I decided that it was time to continue to serve my clients in other ways. I started my travel business, Your Travel Ambassador Travel Agency in 2018 and ExpressionZbyAlexis in 2020. This allowed me to continue to serve my clients for all their needs.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a smooth road somewhat. Learning how to protect myself and my client through a contract was the biggest challenge. I joined a community on Facebook, where I would learn from other seasoned photographers about the Dos and Don’ts of owning a photography business. I learned to include a deposit when reserving appointments for a session and more.

I continued to attend classes to learn how to professionally edit photos to keep up with the trends with watch educational videos learning lighting and posing clients. Photography is a craft that you continue to learn as things are always developing.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
My name is Alexis Reeves and I own and manage Alexis Reeves Photography. I have been in business for 14 years serving clients in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and most recently Negril, Jamaica. I specialize in weddings and families. I usually meet my clients at their wedding and continue to serve them as their family grows from children’s photos to family photos. My photography style is journalistic. I like to tell a story with my images. I love to evoke emotion in my images, from laughter to love. In the 14 years servicing clients, my clients rave about my customer service. When meeting my clients, I chat with them to learn more about them as people. This allows me to serve them from the session to connecting with them as family, celebrating life as we live it.

What makes me most proud as a serial entrepreneur is that I offer a life-lasting impression to my clients. It makes me feel so great to know that my wedding and family clients have my work posted in their homes for years. My photography work will be something that is celebrated during and an afterlife is completed. Photos tell a story and I am happy that God gave me the talent to tell them. As a business owner, I am able to assist my clients with several needs, from planning family vacations, capturing their family photos and making t-shirts for the family reunion. I am a one-stop-shop for travel needs, photography and customize apparel and gifts. They are able to experience my 5-star service in many ways.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The most proudest moment in my career is when I was blessed to serve a client at a destination wedding to Negril, Jamaica. It was the first of many opportunities for me. It was my first destination wedding as a photographer and managing a large group for travel internationally. I learned so much and had the opportunity to serve this client from all three businesses.

I also had the opportunity to solo travel to Europe, visiting Milan, Italy, Paris, France, Pompeii, Italy, Rome, Italy and Switzerland. I visited the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, Bellagio, Italy, Milan Cathedral and more. With this adventure, it makes a total of 20 countries and four continents I have visited in my lifetime.
