Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexie Thrasher.
Lexie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My career in the beauty world was a complete accident. I had accepted and was already planning, my first year at KSU when I got a scholarship for cosmetology school. I had grown up around hairstylists and some of my first jobs were in salons, but the thought of going to cosmetology school had never occurred to me. I’m so thankful that I took the opportunity. What I thought would be a better job to have while working through college turned into a career I truly have a passion for.
I knew from the start of my career. I didn’t want to work behind the chair my whole life. After graduating from school, I worked in a professional beauty supply store. My main goal was to try and find a salon home and also see what other options I had in the beauty world. There I was able to become a “Beauty Guru,” which is a fancy way of saying, beauty educator. I love it, and I still love it! It gave me opportunities to travel across the country for shows like Redken Symposium in Vegas, Premier Orlando (the largest hair show in the country), and a special group of Dermalogica classes at the company headquarters in L.A. I loved learning and seeing how the beauty world was evolving, but also I loved teaching. Platform education and teaching in small groups was amazing. Being able to see someone’s eyes light up when they understood the subject made my heart so happy. But, I did notice there was a huge hole in beauty education. Very few classes and techniques were geared toward what hair and color actually is. Hair color at its core is a chemical, but no one I could find truly knew what was in that tube of color.
In my journey to dive deeper into the chemistry of hair, I found my salon home! There I found a place of like-minded hair nerds who keep asking until they know why. We have cosmetic chemists on speed dial, an in-house educator, and an owner who is always finding something new for us to learn. It’s the best environment for wanting to better your knowledge and craft. It pushed me to want to find out the “why’s” for myself. I am currently in college to become a cosmetic chemist, working towards a Bachelor’s in Chemistry, and eventually, a Master’s in Cosmetic Science. For now, I’m enjoying being behind the chair and helping my clients see the beauty I see in them. I’m excited to see what is yet to come!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a rough journey from the start. Each new step I took in my career was something I never saw coming. I never expected to work at a beauty supply store, let alone find my passion for education while working there. It has been a stressful and uncertain journey, but I wouldn’t change any of it. It has brought me to where I am today and made me a more confident and passionate person.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The beauty world is constantly changing and evolving everyday. Currently, we’re seeing a huge increase in clients wanting natural, eco-friendly, and ethically-made products. I absolutely love it! I see a huge shift coming over the next couple of years for a more informed and aware clientele. Trend-wise, I see lots of colors with fun textures. More and more industries are relaxing their rules on hair and appearances. Meaning professions like nursing and teaching can have fun and colorful hair while still keeping their job. We already see an increase in fun color because more people are working from home. They are also embracing their beautiful natural texture. I’ve had several clients that have straightened their hair for years and are finally embracing their curls, and they look beautiful! I hope as the years go on, people are able to express themselves with their hair more without having to fear judgment.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I played softball from around age 7 to 19, and because of that, most of my weekends were at softball parks or batting cages. I was around 14 years old and was playing on my local rec softball team. Like usual, we were all joking around in the dugout and singing absolutely ridiculous cheers to encourage our team as they went up to bat. I stepped in the batter’s box, smiling and ready to hit. I knew as soon as the ball connected, it was a good hit. I was watching the ball as I rounded 1st instead of watching where I was running. The ball sailed over the fence, and before I could rejoice, I stepped on second base wrong and sprained my ankle. My coach at third knew something was wrong and was shaking her head in disbelief as I rounded third. I was basically half-running, half-limping to home as my teammates gathered around to congratulate me.
As soon as I stepped on home plate they attacked me. They hit my helmet and patted my back, which is normally a great feeling. Except for this time, with each hit, I stepped back on my hurt ankle. Everyone finally started walking back towards the dugout, and I was full-on hobbling at this point. My head coach looked at me and said, “How did you manage to hurt yourself that bad on a home run?!” Thankfully we did win the game, although I watched from the dugout sitting on the bench, with my leg propped up on a bucket. Looking back this is a memory I hold dear because it comes from such a fun and happy time. During the game, my coach was angry, but by the end we were all laughing at how ridiculously klutzy I was. From then on, whenever we hit a home run. We all gently stepped on second base and then ran home.
