Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee and Shelby Smith.
Lee and Shelby, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My family and I love going out together for ice cream. We ran across a homemade ice cream shop that we would frequently go to during the summer months. We would travel an hour to north Atlanta to get this delicious treat. We then decided to open our own shop. I went to North Carolina to train and get certified with the liquid nitrogen to make the delicious ice cream! We did not want to travel far nor wanted anyone else to travel, so we decided to open our shop on the south side. We chose Arbor Place Mall because it was an ideal location.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We did not have a smooth road. It took two attempts and one year to open the location. Shortly after opening the location, Covid 19 hit, which shut down our location for two months. The months that we closed were our peak times, so we don’t know the full sales potential.
Please tell us about Lula’s Chill Factory.
We are a small black-owned family business that specializes in homemade ice cream and water ice. We make our ice cream made to order with liquid nitrogen. All of our ingredients are fresh and flavorful! We are most proud of the fact that we were able to remain open through the pandemic, and we were rated for having the best ice cream in Georgia! What sets us apart from the rest is that the ice cream is made in front of the customer with natural and fresh ingredients. We also offer the best customer service with a smile!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If we had to start over, we would have picked a bigger location to offer more products.
