Meet Jarrett Holborough of J the Barman in Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarrett Holborough.

Jarrett, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is Jarrett Holborough. I am 23 years old and born and raised in Atlanta, GA. I’ve been in the hospitality industry for a little over seven years and have held positions from server, barback, and bartender. I enjoy all things, spirits, wine, and beer. I also have a burning passion for the business’s education piece, and I strive to further my knowledge every day. I was taught a lot of my knowledge by Randy Hayden, who is the beverage director of Slater Hospitality. He has been in the business for over 20 years. As I grow through the industry, I cherish the opportunity to teach others and pass on much of the knowledge that I’ve been given. I love what I do and see myself as a hospitality lifer.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have definitely been some obstacles. When I first started bartending, I was 19. So to be bartending at an early age and not being allowed to taste was a big obstacle. But it forced me to dive into a handful of books which helped me deeply in the long run.

We’d love to hear more about the business.
I bartend at 12 Cocktail Bar. We do not have a menu. You can either order a classic cocktail or tell us what spirit you like and a few flavors you like and we make you something to order. It really helps me stay creative and always curate a special experience for every guest.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I was taught cocktail, beer, and wine knowledge from Randy Hayden, Beverage Director of Slater Hospitality. He has taken me to tons of tastings, events and even coached me up to winning some cocktail competitions. He also ha be taught me some good life lessons about being a good man away from the bar. He has ultimately become a great mentor and a lifetime friend to me.
