Today we’d like to introduce you to Isis Shaw.
Hi Isis, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story is a little different from your typical dancer. I’ve always loved to dance. However, I didn’t actually start taking classes until my freshman year of college. When applying for college, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to major in but I knew that it had to deal with some type of art. I loved music and I loved performing. At that time of my life, I didn’t really know what route I wanted to go in but I knew the joy that dance brought me, so I decided to go for it. After getting accepted into FAMU, I found out that they would no longer offer dance as a major. Therefore, I had to find something else so I decided to major in theatre performance. I felt that it was the closest to dance that I would get. Now looking back, that was the best decision that I’ve ever made. I’ve always felt the dance was my passion but it wasn’t until I began fully pursuing it, that I learned it was my purpose.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a dancer that began training later in life, it’s easy to feel as if you aren’t qualified. However, I always have to remind myself that hard work outshines talent. In the dance industry, there’s always going to be roadblocks but you have to keep fighting if this is what you really want. I think one of the most difficult roadblocks for me was when I got into my car accident in September 2019. It was definitely life-changing. During that time, all I was able to do was reflect and not being able to move as much was all that I needed to remain grateful that I still had a chance. The car accident could’ve been detrimental but with God’s grace and mercy I ended up walking away with no major injuries. At that moment knew that I was walking in my purpose and couldn’t give up.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Dancer/Choreographer that specializes in hip hop. Most people know me for the energy and sauce that I bring as a dancer. Overall, I’m most proud of my accomplishments in such a short period of time. My ambition and drive is what sets me apart from others. No matter my circumstances, I refuse to give up.
What makes you happy?
Dance. It may sound cliche but dance is what makes me happy. The freedom that it gives me without the worry of judgment. Dance allows me to express myself when I can’t think of words to say. It is the only thing in my life that has never let me down.
