Meet Anthony Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Richardson.

Hi Anthony, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Eugene didn’t start off as Eugene. It was originally called Altruisme, which meant “selfless” in French. We never put the name on any pieces, though. My brothers told me that we should call it Eugene, which is my middle name and that the pieces we create should be a reflection of how I see fashion. Not many people know that the original name (Altruisme) was rooted from my non-profit Kloset Kleanerz, it plays a big role in how the brand moves, from the things we say on pieces and to the art we display. I’ve only been selling Eugene pieces since September of 2019. This is not long but it feels like we’ve been doing this forever. The process to get to where we are now wasn’t easy, honestly. But it’s a recipe we have, well, more of a saying and it is “be better than we were last time.” We focus on what we have to do, without comparison or complaint. That’s how we’ve got to where we are now and it’s how we plan to keep moving forward.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If it was a smooth road, everybody would be winning. So, no, I wouldn’t say smooth, but it hasn’t been treacherous either. We’ve had our share of bumps in the road, from people getting over to not getting exactly what we want or how we want it. That’s the business, though. We understand adversity and that things don’t always go as planned. We learn from it and move forward.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Eugene is a clothing brand that was founded in 2019 in Clarksville, TN. We are probably most known for the designs/graphics we use on our pieces. I’d like to say the biggest things that set us apart from other brands are the graphics and quotes you see on our pieces. Everything we put together has a meaning behind it. It’s something that someone somewhere can relate to just by looking at it. It’s an art to us. The words that you may read on our clothing tell a story. They are describing what you are looking at on the graphic, while the graphic is symbolizing what the words are saying. Everything has a purpose. Our vision is to relate to people with art through fashion. It’s crazy because I am excited about Eugene and the future it holds. We’ve come a long way and we haven’t even really begun the journey. People are starting to understand that Eugene offers versatility in its pieces, from denim to t-shirts and it can be worn by men to women of all ages.

Any big plans?
The plans for the future really stay the same. They’re just to keep getting better, growing, and staying true to ourselves. I can’t give out too much information on what to expect in 2021 but we do have some things that we are looking forward to and that we are already planning for in 2021, one of them is our first official Pop-Up shop that will happen back in our home town in Tennessee, so we are excited about that. We are making a big change to our logo by removing the crescent moon from it. Our logo now will just be a capital E. We wanted the letter to hold its own weight and we didn’t want to be limited to designs since everything wouldn’t always have a crescent moon on it or in it.
