Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Jonas.
Hi Desiree, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started Young Black and Professional due to the need for a service that assists recent graduates with finding a career after college. As a previous hiring manager within the public health field, I always felt the need to host interns and give them insight into their chosen profession. I noticed the lack of preparedness among many of my black interns and felt the need to make a change. Through reviewing multiple resumes, cover letters and LinkedIn profiles, I have provided guidance and assistance to so many different students on their journeys.
At the beginning of 2020, I decided to put my plan into motion with the assistance of my fiance, who also hosts multiple interns in his profession. Young Black and Professional were born out the need to assist young black graduates with navigating the professional world, from applying for jobs to moving up in their profession. I began providing guidance through YouTube videos and weekly emails providing guidance on resume building, job seeking and interview guidance. As Young Black and Professional has grown, I began offering one on one counseling services to assist those in need. Now I have developed Recent Grad Boot Camp, which is an online course designed to assist graduates with developing their resume, cover letter, digital portfolio, interviewing and a lot more. This course has been my solution to providing services to multiple graduates at once and has been successful and helping a multitude of graduates find careers they love.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has most certainly not been a smooth road. There are days where it gets hard to run your own business with the development of material constantly, and the slow progress towards achieving certain goals. However, when I receive client emails, testimonials and overall gratitude it let’s me know that I’m providing a service which is both beneficial and a necessity for recent graduates. This allows me to push forward with providing resources and guidance for recent graduates.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I provide career counseling, resources and online courses to recent college graduates to assist them with landing a job within their chosen career field. In addition to YouTube videos and weekly newsletters offering free guidance, resources and tips to landing a job I also provide free trainings every month which focus on various topics such as dealing with imposter syndrome, building your resume and many things that specific to young black professionals such as microaggressions and dealing with racism in the workplace. What makes Young Black and Professional unique is that it focuses specifically on the struggles of being young, black and professional in the workplace. Being the youngest at a table of senior-level executives can be extremely intimidating and top it off with being black can create its own set of trials and tribulations. Young Black and Professional is the solution to offering resources and guidance to navigate these spaces and excel in their chosen professions.
I’m most proud of Recent Grad Boot Camp, an online course designed to assist recent grads with developing their resume, cover letter, digital portfolio and their interviewing skills all in one place. This course is not only jammed packed with worksheets and resume templates but I provided specific instructions to crafting a resume and cover letter that can stand out and get noticed. Also included with this course are bonus courses on how to turn your resume into a job offer and a lot more! This course is not only jammed packed with guidance but its also affordable because no one should encounter a barrier to obtaining resources to find a job after college.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel as though my passion for helping others get to the next level in their life is the most important ingredient to my success. I’ve always heard the saying, “it’s lonely at the top,” but I believe that’s only because those at the top fail to reach back and bring others up with them. Through Young Black and Professional, I hope to bring many young men and women up with me and equip them with the tools needed to succeed in their careers.
