Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Kim.
Hi Sam, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
First of all, I give all praise to God of where I am everyday. I always enjoyed watching films throughout my years of high school, but never once thought about trying to become a part of the industry. The reason being was that my main focus at that time in high school was to enter a college with my sport of swimming. Then one day, I was checking through my list of emails and found an email from the swim coach in Savannah College Of Arts & Design interested in speaking with me. I was excited to join the swim team, but was curious about what major to study in because it didn’t have the typical subjects that most college have, such as chemistry, biology, and consultant classes because it’s all based in arts!
Then I remember grabbing a book with the list of majors for this school and that’s when I flipped to a page, “Performing Arts Major,” that would change my direction in life. I was now known as the first swimmer in the school to perform in both acting and in the pool! Of course, the training was tough and I had to put extra work throughout the night to catch up with my fellow colleagues in acting as well. This constant hard work of looking at yourself in the mirror, working on different facial expression and looking back on your audition tapes brought me to make it to the Savannah College of Art & Design Performing Arts Showcase group in my senior year! With the Lord’s help and this opportunity to showcase my talents lead me to land many more opportunities as well. I can not wait to share more about it with your editors and throughout the interview.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a tough time at the moment due to Covid-19 situation, but what’s great about this struggle is that we can take the time to stay home and work on ourselves. I think this is the most struggle that the entertainment industry has been for a long time, but great to see actors like myself to keep working on scene studies, our spiritual life, taking the time to be with family and friends around us, and to keep yourself motivated with making your content for the world to see.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am most known for both my comedic acting and also my music. I started to pick rapping as another enjoyment and tool in my life. It is not just rapping, but rapping in two languages in the same song, which are Korean & English, and I acknowledge that is what sets me apart from others. I am most proud of my work in a song I wrote and created with a producer called “Who Am I.” This is a song that I wrote while I questioned myself who am I in the world that we live in now.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes, I have learned that collaboration is even more important during the Covid-19. Some of us like to keep ourselves in the box and do it ourselves, but what I learn is that we can’t reach a higher limit in creativity without the help of other artists as well.
