Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryson White.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I think I knew I always wanted to be an entertainer. I didn’t have an exact profession in mind, but I knew I loved telling stories and seeing how it affected other people. Usually, I was just trying to get my family and friends to laugh. Fast forward to about age 12. I got my first guitar from my Dad and even though I had no idea how to play it, I was so excited to have it. I began taking lessons and learning the typical songs every beginner learns like “Sweet Home Alabama” or “Smoke on the Water,” but I quickly lost interest in lessons and stopped going. I was never the best student and I always had this desire and need to figure things out on my own. I can say with confidence that translates to every part of my life, not just guitar lessons. That’s the origin of my story but to save time, let’s fast forward a bit.
About two years ago I was a personal trainer who just happened to play guitar as a hobby. I was so tired of my career if you even want to call it that, and just searching for something new so I moved out to Los Angeles with this idea I was gonna be an actor (after taking a few different acting classes) and pay the bills by continuing my training business. Long story short, I left that city and moved back home within eight weeks. I get back Atlanta and I go back to work at the gym and in walks this beautiful girl, Kaylie. We started dating soon after we met and it was when she heard me play guitar that everything changed for me. She told me that “this is for sure what you should be doing with your life.” And I took her word for it. I decided to start writing music and soon after released an EP with the help of my friend, Josué Posada.
After that, I started playing live music at different restaurants and then invested that money I made from gigs into a home studio. I then started recording and mastering my own songs right from my apartment. One day, on Instagram, I got a message from one of my Dad’s friends about this Swisher Sweets Artist Project that Brantley Gilbert was a part of. The contest winner received $15,000 and I thought, why not apply. As I was applying, I had this gut feeling I was going to win. Just a few weeks later I received a call that I won and even though I had a good feeling about it, I was still speechless and in complete shock. I got to speak with Brantley Gilbert via Skype and he had nothing but kind words and encouragement for me. Now I’m still performing live music every week and writing and recording new music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I always just tell myself, “Life happens for you, and not to you if you choose to see it that way.” So while, yes, I’ve had moments of frustration, especially in the beginning when I was doing tons of non-paying gigs. I always choose to see things as lessons or opportunities for growth. The more responsibility you take for your life, the more meaningful it becomes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer/songwriter/musician. What I’m most proud of with my music is that I always write from a very real place. Even the songs I look back on that did not turn out how I’d like from a music standpoint… Lyrically, I know exactly what I was trying to say in the song. And I continue to do that now and I’m very excited for the new music I’m creating.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
You know, I can’t think of anything that people who know me would be surprised by.
