Today we’d like to introduce you to LaCarla Brockington.
Hi LaCarla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi, my name is LaCarla Brockington AKA Chef Monee’. As a teenager, I’ve always loved cooking and had the dream of becoming a chef. I come from a family full of caterers and cooks so that’s pretty much all I know is good cooking. My mom passed away the first semester of my high school senior year in 2016 and after that, I felt lost and didn’t know what I wanted to do after I walked across that stage, but what I did know is that I had a passion for cooking. We would always watch the cooking shows and she would always question me about what I would’ve done with the ingredients that they were given on the show.
I was given a chance to compete in a peanut recipe competition right before my passed away and I came in 3rd place of all the other schools in GA boy, was she proud! Ever since then, I discovered that becoming a chef was what I wanted to do so I went to Culinary school but due to financial aid reasons and COVID, I decided to take a break from school and step out on faith to start my business. I’ve done a few gigs for close friends before but this time I knew that I was ready, I got booked for my very first brunch in August of 2020 and every since then I’ve been BOOKED & BUSY. I took that crazy leap of faith and trusted the process , who would’ve thought at the age of 21 my dreams would come to reality. So far, I’ve had the opportunity to do gigs in TX, TN, SC, Atlanta, Statesboro, my hometown and surrounding cities. I look forward to being able to take my talent even further around the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In the beginning, I struggled with setting rates, giving out discounts and finding help.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a private chef and caterer. I specialize in cooking I’m known for food that is good for the soul and giving my clients the full fine dining experience. I’m most proud that I’m able to make my dream come true and be successful at it even though I wasn’t able to finish school. I feel my professionalism and passion for cooking is what sets me apart from others.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is when I cooked my first full meal for my parent’s anniversary by myself and everything turned out great. I know that I made them proud and another would be watching the food network with my mom or helping my dad in the kitchen.
