Conversations with Chris Whitehead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Whitehead.

Hi Chris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started playing golf in the Summer of 2015, I remember it like it was yesterday. Hands down the most humbling experience of my life, I never knew a sport existed that could truly challenge you both mentally and physically; I always loved hooping but Golf was different, it demanded my discipline, concentration, and humility. I’m an 80’s baby, I grew up watching Tiger Woods dominate in the mid 90’s and thought to myself “Wow, somebody that looks like me is dominating a sport that is historically known for not necessarily treating African Americans the best.” Tiger’s reign catapulted my interest in the sport and gave me the confidence to take it up as what I thought would just be a hobby, but shortly after turned into an obsession. This new found obsession grew and continued to mix with my other interest; networking, connecting with friends, and shockingly sneakers! I’ve been a HUGE sneaker enthusiast since I was 15, currently I’ve downsized my collection to around 250 pairs for the sake of making room to accommodate my wife and daughter’s needs. However, once I realized that brands such as Nike, Adidas, & Puma to name a few had been releasing green side footwear to accommodate golfers like myself, I became obsessed, but also intrigued at what this branching of sneaker culture meant for growing the game of golf.

Quickly I realized that two of my passions (Golf & Sneakers) could be used to bring more diversity into the golf world. As I mentioned earlier, Golf is renowned for the not being the most inclusive sport; I quickly realized that I had a profound responsibility to myself and the game of golf to aid in ending the exclusive “country club” era by bridging Sneaker Culture and the game of golf. This gave me a passion and purpose to create an outlet that would allow me to utilize my love for golf and sneakers to not only grow the game in terms of diversity, but also allow others the opportunity to experience all the opportunities this sport has to offer with regards to business, networking, and self-development. With this strategic concept, I developed my YouTube Channel “Tee Up Kicks with Chris”; a platform where I discuss and review both golf sneakers and apparel. There are a ton of Youtubers that review and unbox Sneakers. However, the niche I found in reviewing golf sneakers and apparel, especially as an African American is both unique and necessary.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The last word I would use to describe the road I’m on is “smooth”.. lol,, Honestly, it’s been a journey, creating a YouTube channel with any particular niche market always has its challenges. However those same challenges are what make you appreciate the journey and they also allow you to perfect your craft. I think the biggest struggle for me has been time management and learning to break down each day of the week into sectors, minute by minute and hour by hour. Being both a Father and Husband I have to be sure that both my lovely ladies get the love and attention they need and deserve; while at the same time ensuring that I’m doing my part in growing my following and pursuing my purpose.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I connect people to passions both seen and unseen. My specialties include but are not limited to networking, IT, and developing relationships. I am without a doubt MOST proud of my family! My wife and daughter have given me a new meaning and purposed in life, which propels me into grind mode every day. The one super power that sets me apart from other is my willingness to try and truly understand every perspective, but I truly take joy in seeing how others view the world and utilize that same understanding to get an overall better scope of just how diverse the world we live in is.
