Today we’d like to introduce you to Rikki Clark McCoy.
Hi Rikki, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I’ve always been considered an old soul. Being from a small town, I always seen a bigger life for myself and often wondered how/why some of my family and friends were okay being comfortable with staying where they were without exploring all that life had to offer. That is where my passion for mental health came from. I’ve always enjoyed talking with people and helping them unleash their true potential. At the age of 17, I went to college and it’s been nonstop since then. I am a first-generation college graduate, so a lot of things that I do are self-guided. As my graduate school CAU motto, “I found a way or made one,” Learning your worth as you break generational patterns and navigate young adulthood, I always knew being at a corporate job would not be long term for me. I worked various social work jobs to gain the knowledge and experience I needed before deciding to start a private practice. In 2016 Flourishing Minds was established. My mission at Flourishing Minds is to help people move from survival to a flourishing state of mind. As black and brown people, we have lived in survival mode long enough. It is my passion to help our community heal.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been pretty smooth road career-wise. I’ve been blessed to have some great connections and opportunities to grow into the mental health professional I am today. The challenges are in balancing all things life. As a wife, mother of a 5-year-old, and a business owner, the balance is real. Time management and organizational skills have been key with keeping the business and my personal life going. I never want to be someone who is all work and not able to enjoy life. I am very intentional with being about my bag, but being about my family as well. I task all my clients with this question: “who are you outside of work?” Work should not being our only focus. But we live in a society that has molded us to produce and to feel that if you are not producing, you are not valuable. My goal is to help everyone realize, you are valuable just as you are.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Flourishing Minds?
Flourishing Minds is a private practice in Atlanta, Georgia, providing face-to-face and Telehealth therapy. Although we primarily work with black women and women of color, we welcome the opportunity to help anyone looking for a safe space to express themselves. In a society where we are constantly criticized for our differences, it is my goal at Flourishing Minds to create a non-judgmental space where people can freely embrace who they are. With five other clinicians helping fulfill the mission, our goal is to help people move from survival to a flourishing state of mind. Diverse clinical skills, along with our ability to relate, helps to foster a healthy therapeutic relationship and alleviate any negative perspectives associated with personal development and growth. Clients describe me as being supportive, down-to-earth, and knowledgeable about current societal issues.
I am also transparent in my ability to be a therapist, but also be a human being and share my personal world. One example, I enjoy music and some of my favorite artists are Prince and Megan the Stallion. I enjoy helping women feel confident in the fact that you can be professional but still have fun too. My approach is integrative, applying therapy, medicine, and physical health to promote holistic wellness. My specialty treatment areas include Mindfulness, Stress Management, Work-Life Balance, Life Transitions, Anxiety, Depression, Finding your Purpose, Young Adulthood, Sexuality, and Postpartum Depression. When I am not in therapist mode, my personal life is pretty busy. I’m a wife, a mother to a wonderful 5-year-old boy, a sister, a daughter, and friend. I enjoy yoga, music, traveling, and exploring different cultures. We are currently accepting clients in the state of Georgia.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
My father was a DJ, so growing up, I lived in music. Music is therapy for me. Some of my favorite artists are Prince and Megan the Stallion. I love Megan because she is confident in who she is an unapologetic as a woman. I enjoy helping women feel confident in the fact that you can be professional but still have fun too. My approach is integrative, applying therapy, medicine, and physical health to promote holistic wellness. I am also a lover of yoga. Yoga and music are huge in my self-care routine. They have helped me on my own mental health journey.
