Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Taylor.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up in Brooklyn, the first thing to want to do is get out of the hood and be successful. School was never something that interested me. I always struggled. At age 16, I found myself with a bad crowd and lost myself. I ended up having to go to therapy and my diagnosed with depression. My mom moved me to Atl going into my junior year, it was very hard for me to adjust. By my senior year, I was co-captain of my cheer team but still struggled with school. I took my act for the first time and decided that I didn’t want to go to college. So I took a risk and decided to start my own business. Growing up, my mom was a hairstylist in east NY, Brooklyn and it was very hard because she worked all the time but I decided when I got into this job, it was going to be different. I was going to make time for everyone and do what I love to do best. I doubted myself for a long time because I wasn’t going the traditional route but eventually, I because confident by myself. But I graduate from Paul Mitchell at age 19. From there, my business started to grow even more and now I’m here. I turned my basement into my own little suite with my friend @sorarenails.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Depression has been a very hard thing to deal with because it ways you down. Also, low self-esteem and I was still kind of new to Georgia so I didn’t really have any friends. The school Paul Mitchell wasn’t supportive at all, they didn’t care about your successes and people only wanted to be my friend for a hairstyle.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a hairstylist in Fayetteville, GA. I specialize in sewins, silk press, natural hair, coloring, micro links and braids. I also sell bundles and hair accessories. I am most proud the growth of my client’s hair from them being committed to me. What sets me apart from others is that I actually take the time to learn my clients and their wants/needs. I build a bond with each client at a time and take my time to make sure their hair is done perfectly.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I am a very financial person and the book that has expanded my mindset and the way I think even more is “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter.
