Community Highlights: Meet Nyah Sneed of PurposelyNatural

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyah Sneed.

Hi Nyah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up, I used to hate my hair due to bullying and negative stereotypes. I used to beg my mom to perm my hair because I wanted straight hair (I have 4C hair) and I used to get called ”nappy headed” a lot, and for a long time, I hated my hair texture. As I got older I learned to love my hair texture and when I was about 13, my hair came out. I wasn’t bald but it got shorter so I just wore hats and scarves and braids, and my hair was always dry.

When I was 15, I got into my natural hair and learned how to take care of my natural hair I used to make my own DIY products and I grew out my hair. When people saw my hair, people always ask me what did I use on my hair, I always say I make my own products and I will tell them what I would do and they’ll say “bottle it up and sell it to me,” and my mother suggested that I start my own haircare brand.   I really didn’t want to because I was too afraid that nobody would buy it. But she (my mother) encouraged it all the time, and when I was 17, I was lying in bed and I saw this young girl who was 13 and she had her own cosmetic business and then it inspired me to get started on my business and now here I am.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My childhood was a little bit tough and sad for me. I was this very shy, quiet, skinny, loner kid and my mother raised me, my brother, and my sister by herself and we struggled along the way. When I was 16, we were homeless and slept in our car twice. A lot of people we thought was our “friends” or that we could count on turned their backs on us, and I felt so lonely and thought things wasn’t going to get any better and I almost committed suicide, but I thought about my life and I didn’t want that to be my ending.

As you know, we’re big fans of PurposelyNatural. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
PurposelyNatural is an all-natural haircare brand. I make hair products using natural oils, butters, herbs, and Ayurvedic ingredients. When I decided to start this business, I wanted to be different from other hair care brands, so I took the time to research and learn about different herbs, oils, butters and their benefits. I wanted to create products that could solve a lot of hair/scalp problems like dry scalp, dandruff, dry hair, hair lice, brittle hair, etc. I am most proud of the fact my products actually work and people really like them. I like the fact that something I created is helping someone. I’m very proud and grateful for that.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
You really have to WORK HARD, have discipline, be consistent, and research. Open your mouth and start telling every person you see about your business. Lean your target audience, how to market your products, promote your products on different social media platforms, learn how to email market, etc. Make a vision bored and look at it every day and just know that everything you want and desire you’re going to have and is going to come true if you believe it. Read books, say affirmations, speak life over yourself and your business.
