Today we’d like to introduce you to Gokeekeego.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I got started in rapping just over one year ago. At the time, I was in performing arts school, pursuing an acting career (Disney and Nickelodeon dreams). I had done a few small movie roles and commercials, and just as it felt like I was getting my footing, covid hit. Classes stopped, castings stopped, my growth in the acting world felt like it was on hold. Right before the covid hit, I was receiving vocal lessons. I started practicing at home once the country shut down. Safe to say, it was going to take me a long time to develop my singing voice, especially without professional help.
One day while riding to take my sisters home, my dad was playing beats he found on YouTube when he played this one catchy beat. Six seconds later, not knowing I was speaking out loud, I started rapping, “who you talking to, period pooh.” My dad and mom turned around speechless. My dad then said, “wait a minute, say that again.” Fast forward one year later, and I have 75 recorded songs, 15 music videos, over 50 live performances, and over a million views on YouTube. Me and my team have really made a name for myself in Atlanta. Opening up for Lil Boosie, Saucy Santana, that girl Lay Lay, Trina, Famous Ocean, Supa Peach. It’s been such an amazing journey in such a small amount of time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course, it’s been very challenging. The first hard challenge was realizing music and hiphop is such a big world. It’s not. You make a song, tell ya, friends and family, they tell other people, then you blow up. In the beginning finding out nobody cared, just a small few hurt my feelings a little. The second challenge was COVID. COVID caused all kinds of issues. The worst was the over-saturation of the music industry. It seemed everybody had the idea to pursue their music dreams all of a sudden.
My dad realized he didn’t know enough about the music industry and, for one year on top of everything else he does, decided to dive in deep and studied the entire music industry youtube video by youtube video. The third biggest challenge was perfecting my flow and sound. I’m still getting better by the day, but with the competition and talent that’s out there, my mom and dad helped me push myself to learn things faster. The last obstacle that I had to overcome was learning the crowed and how to interact with them at different events, no matter if there were 20 people there or 200+.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Rapping is my first love, first and foremost, but I’m also an influencer, still passionate in acting and an active brand ambassador. What I’m most proud of is my team. My mom and dad sacrificed so much for me to grow so rapidly. Along with my fantastic producer and engineer, Murfondatrack, I feel so fortunate.
What I say I’m most known for is my unique style of fashion and rap. My mom and dad knew we needed to provide shock value In order to separate me from other kids and we did just that. Besides my fashion, what sets me apart is my consistency and my unique audience. We drop music two, sometimes three times a month and plan on giving kids plenty of content for a long, long time. Our audience is unique in all ways. We wanted to make music for kids and adults alike, similar to Lil bow wow in the 2000s. Picking the right beats, the right flow was crucial. I’m proud to say it seems the formula is working so far. The feedback from parents is just as good as the kids, and I’m so proud. It was a huge gamble to be so bold and not rap about good grades like every other kid, but we pulled it off.
How do you define success?
Success is doing what I love to do, getting paid to do what I love and spending time with my family.
