Meet Tiffany Massey of Structure Hair Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Massey.

Tiffany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hello! I’m Tiffany, owner and stylist at Structure Hair Studio. I’m excited to celebrate 10 years of business ownership in January! My story stems from a cosmetology student in search of a salon to call home. My area lacked the environment, there were two choices: ma and pa or stuffy, nothing wrong with those, they just weren’t where I fit. I was looking for, an upscale atmosphere where clients also feel at home. That’s when I decided that I couldn’t be the only stylist who felt that way in my town. After months of finishing school, apprenticing at two different salons, I came across this little shopping center on our busiest highway. Immediately, after stopping by and looking in the window, I knew that was it. 2 months later after crunching numbers, meetings, buildout, it began. 2008 was the year the economy crashed, so it seemed like a bad idea, but things fell into place. 1 1/2 years later, we needed to expand! We DOUBLED the amount of chairs, stylists, and clientele. Being a leader of an amazing group of talented stylists is an honor and being the best stylist, I can be for my clients is what it’s all about. It’s not about me, but every person who walks in our doors.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Haha! What is smooth? All jokes aside, yes there have many bumps in the road! Keeping my team on the same page, keeping the communication open, and motivated will always be a challenge. We spend a good amount of our lives together so it’s important that we respect, help, grow, and support each other. The second challenge for me is taking care of “owner duties” while working full time as a stylist and platform artist. But it’s worth it because I don’t wish to only manage my salon. My passion is hair.

Please tell us about Structure Hair Studio.
Structure Hair Studio houses some of the most talented stylists in our area. We pride ourselves on any service we offer. We specialize is color, balayage, vivid colors, formal styles, wedding party hair and makeup. Definitely what sets us apart from other salons is the time we take to make sure every client loves their look. Our personalities make the salon experience exciting and the relationships strong. We’re more than just a hair salon. We do life with people.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t advise partnerships. They can be wonderful, but they can also be very taxing. It’s like having an additional spouse (financially).

I would have been more selective in hiring. Never hire someone who is just “okay”. You want people who love your industry like you do. Their passion drives and excites the entire team.

Establishing a business from scratch has been such a journey. I’ve learned so much and have been so blessed for the people put in my path.
