Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Bunny Davis.
Hi Jenny Bunny, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The journey to becoming a tattoo artist and studio owner came from humble beginnings. I came from a small, Midwestern town to the Atlanta area to finish school, studying art. After I graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA, I came to a fork in the road – go on to grad school or step into the “real world”. As much as I love learning (and still do!), it was a childhood dream of mine to be a tattoo artist since I was ten years old. I chose my childhood pipe dream. I eventually landed an apprenticeship in 2005 with Craig Foster of Skinwerks Tattoo & Design in Carrollton, GA. I then worked for Cap Szumski at Timeless Tattoo in Atlanta, GA, and Reed at Alameda Tattoo in Alameda, CA. My family moved back to Georgia in 2017 and eventually opened my own private studio in Roswell, GA.
I cater to clients from all over the country and from all walks of life. My career as a woman of color in a male-dominated industry, after paying my dues for many years building my clientele and honing my craft (which I still continue to do), has given me the flexibility and lifestyle to spend time with my children and cultivate my other passions.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There were some major obstacles I’ve had to work through throughout my whole career even to present day. First and most obviously, honing my craft. My mentors have told me that they can teach me as much as they can, but only experience will fill in the gaps and develop my style and skill. Lastly, being a woman of color in male-dominated industry – being talked over, clients not believing me or assuming I’m the receptionist, low-key (or obvious) racist remarks, being sexualized/fetishized as a tattooed female Asian woman, and being a neurodivergent person (autism, ADHD, anxiety/depression)- all those social obstacles built my character and made me more compassionate.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an Asian American woman tattoo artist in the metro Atlanta area, I’ve built a loyal clientele, not only in Georgia but also nationwide. I have clients travel from all over the country to see me, looking for fine lines, intricate tattoos, pattern work, watercolor and painterly tattoo effects, Asian style tattoos, floral work, and most other non-traditional tattoo styles. I also have clients come to me for alternatives to tattoo removal in the way of cover up work. Scar cover ups and mastectomy tattoos are also something I have experience with. I love getting to know my clients, as they come from all walks of life. Tattooing since 2005, I pride myself in operating an inclusive studio, giving all of my clients a high-end, boutique and spa-like experience when they get artwork by me.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you get rejected or fail, figure out your mistakes, modify your approach, and try again. You can’t learn unless you mess up. Also – don’t be deceived by the notion of instant gratification. Cultivate your patience, persistence and perseverance.
