Inspiring Conversations with Steve Randall of Project Randall Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Randall.

Hi Steve, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started in photography when I was in college at Virginia State University. I took two (2) classes and I was in love with it ever since. I used my tag name for a long time “7CitiesVa” and finally evolved into “Project Randall Media” a couple of years ago. The name was conceptualized by a friend who told me that I needed to be more professional with my business name to be able to hit different markets. I took the advice brainstormed for weeks about it and came up with “Project Randall Media.”

It has been a grind over the last two (2) years. As I worked another job and did my photography in my free time. I knew all along that I wanted to venture off on my own to do my business full-time but never knew the date or time of my grand scheme. Until one night, I had a very vivid dream at the end of September 2021. That dream was later confirmed and validated by an unknown person to me at that time a few days later. After processing my thoughts and praying, I decided to put in my official notice to leave my position.

I gave my job at the time a 45 day notice that I would be leaving in October 2021. While many people would sit around and ponder this move, I realized one important thing; there is no right time to stand on your own when it comes to entrepreneurship. I’ve heard people say that you should wait until you have enough savings. That’s good and could possibly work if I had a partner. I heard people say ” that I should wait until the new year.” I’ve even heard people say that or rather question the field as being lucrative. So like I said before, I prayed about it and decided to make the move to be fully independent from others and breathe on my own accord when it comes to making moves and money. So I said all that to say, while I am not new to photography, I am still green when it comes to being an entrepreneur in the field of photography. By the grace of God, I have continued to strive. While I am not where I want to be, I’ve never felt more liberated as I do now in my entire life. Being your own boss is a breathe of fresh air and I love every moment of it; even the stress.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely ‘not’ been a smooth road. As a photographer and I would definitely consider myself great at what I do. People tend to ‘try’ to look down on our profession as though it is second-hand and not a necessity. With that thought process, they then try to dictate what they are willing to pay for a shoot. I’ve walked away from many possible clients because I refuse to allow an individual to dictate my worth. I was talking to a friend and they kindly put it “some will; some won’t; some are waiting; so who’s next?” I will pass up money that is not worth my time for people or businesses that value what I do and respect what I bring to the table.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
