Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerderrica Moncrief.
Hi Gerderrica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I go by Dee Moncrief & I am the CEO of D’Laced, here’s a little bit on how i started this journey . I started off very uncomfortable at my job. I was working as a financial analyst for the local hospital, however I just couldn’t get with it anymore, I’d been in the medical field maybe eight years and it was definitely time for a change. With the constant encouragement from my mostly parents & friends I just took a leap of faith and it worked, lol. I always had the gift but I was nervous I wouldn’t be as successful as so many other greats in my city before me. But comparison is theft of joy so I prayed really hard, put in my notice and left my job. I went from three appointments a day to literally overly booked. Within a month, I opened my first salon suite D’Laced. It was so surreal but I knew it was only the beginning. Once I saved enough money, I started to brand myself more. I began to sell wigs, head wraps and I personalized my own waterproof lace glue “StickToMeLikeGlue”. They all which continue to contribute to my current success, since opening my own suite D’Laced has merged with my two closest friends and I am now apart of the Upscale Salon located at 3516 Eastdale Circle in Montgomery, and I am also in the process of relocating to Birmingham to expand the D’Laced Brand.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it was smooth because when you’re already known for something else and your cross over into the hair game it’s kind of hard to be taken serious. You have to prove that your work is good and ppl aren’t just coming because you were already popular sort of speak . Previously while I worked in the medical field I was also very known for hosting and promoting parties in my hometown, so to switch lanes suddenly lol it was definitely constant battle in my mind to just be “ good enough” work wise. But hey, I love a challenge if everything is always easy there’s no room for growth. So I learned to just be consistent, be consistent with my work as far as installs and also consistently have my products on hand no matter how few or more you’re used to having , having your products on hand year round keeps you consistent and reliable for your consumer.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Not only am I a hairstylist and I founded my own charity ItsJustUs in 2018 specifically targeted towards helping our youth. I’ve taken a significant amount of my earnings and placed it back into the community, not only with my ItsJustUs yearly Christmas charity in which myself and others sponsor 20 boys each year for Christmas I also founded the D’Laced scholarship banquet last year in which myself parents, and best friend we gave away four scholarships to four high school seniors in need. It’s always excited when I tell people about the charity side of me because most wouldn’t guess it right off lol other staying busy between hair and my community commitments , I’m really most focused on my most recent Move to Birmingham and getting D’Laced Bham off the ground and running smoothly .
Any big plans?
My plan for the future is to simply expand my brand. D’Laced Birmingham is my first step in my vision to expand . I feel like once I can conquer a new city outside of “ home” I conquer anywhere , so that’s a huge change for me and I’m so excited about it. I plan to not only expand D’Laced but also make my charity bigger and bigger each year. The more connections I make in business, the more helping hands I’ll have in the community.
