Hidden Gems: Meet Dwan Abrams of Luxe Spa Mechele

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dwan Abrams.

Hi Dwan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I come from a long line of entrepreneurs. My paternal grandfather, Handy Abrams, Sr. and his brother, Jesse, were trailblazers. They were both well-respected, successful businessmen. Like my great uncle, I also served in the military. I got out after four years and finished my bachelor’s degree in business.

I never really liked working for anyone. Something about it didn’t feel right to me. I could not imagine myself retiring from a job. When I did land a job in corporate America, I hated it. I worked for a Fortune 100 company; yet I felt as though I didn’t belong there. Getting up and going to work felt like drudgery to me. I would look out my office window, knowing something greater was waiting for me. Having someone else controlling my time and dictating how I spent my day made me feel as though I was existing rather than living. As a means of escape, I immersed myself in books. I became a voracious reader, which eventually led me to writing.

I penned three manuscripts. The third one was the charm. I landed a book deal with a major publisher. I found myself at a crossroads. I had been with my employer for nine years; I knew that if I got to ten, I would be trapped. More than anything, I wanted the freedom and flexibility to schedule my work around my family. So, I quit my job to pursue my dream career; determined not to ever return to corporate America. Fortunately, I received a severance package, a hefty 401k, and company stock…

Since I had a college degree and management skills, I believed I could become an entrepreneur. However, I had other skills. I was a talented writer and speaker. So, I used that to my advantage. I did what I loved, and I was able to earn additional money as a writer, editor, publisher, and speaker.

I ran a successful small press independent publishing house for nearly ten years. While doing so, I wrote several books and worked as a managing editor and fashion editor for a magazine. My writing and speaking abilities opened many doors for me. I had the opportunity to work as a college professor, but it didn’t feel like work. I actually enjoyed it. So much so that I closed down my publishing company.

Five years later, I left the college and became a radio show host. A television producer took notice of me and gave me a job as a media expert on the popular TV show, For My Man, on TV One. More opportunities presented themselves by way of creating, producing, and directing TV shows. I felt comfortable in front of and behind the camera.

Through the years, I tried numerous business ventures while furthering my education. Money didn’t motivate me; freedom did. In the back of my mind, money would come to me. And it did. What was important to me was putting forth an effort to learn something new. I got an MBA, Master’s, and Ph.D while running my own companies and managing my family.

I recently opened a spa. It seemed like a natural progression for me. Especially since I regularly visited the spa. This time, though, I did a lot of research before starting the business. My business plan was thorough, and my funding was intact. Preparation and planning has made a tremendous difference.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As an entrepreneur, I faced many obstacles and challenges. I would not describe it as a relatively smooth road. There were many bumps along the way. Even still, I wouldn’t change a thing.
