Check Out Katia Williams’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katia Williams.

Hi Katia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a little girl, I would always sit next to my aunt with my babydoll, imitating her and adding my own twist to the style. My family noticed my skill and bought me a ton of dolls and they all stayed with a new do! I was known for being able to braid my own hair into any style of my choice, simply looking at a picture and just feeling through my hair without the use of a mirror or any help. I eventually went on to college, joined the army reserves and kinda kept braiding hair as a pst time, not taking it seriously. Since relocating to Atlanta in 2021, I’ve been persistent with my craft, educating myself more and staying up to date with the latest styles and trends.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s definitely an ongoing journey! I’d say post-pandemic, there is a much wider market for hairstylists and braiders because they’ve had so much time browsing the internet and seeing different styles on social media that now they’re eager to try the latest styles. Coming from a small city in Ohio, I was always booked and busy so it can get kind of discouraging trying to gain new clientele in a new state and city on a much larger scale.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in braids, locs and natural hairstyles. I’ve been braiding hair for over 20 years, since I recently starting my own loc journey I’ve been educating myself more about hair at its natural and most healthy state. I’m also skilled at combing out dread/locs after hair has been completely loc’d and restoring your own hair without having to do the big chop!

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My late mother was my biggest supporter! Any and everything I wanted to try, my mom would always be my model. She was the first person with locs that I’ve successfully combed out.
