Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabitha Skye.
Hi Tabitha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began painting, drawing and selling my artwork professionally about three years ago. I was in an accident that made me view my life and my purpose in a totally different way. I was in the hospital for many months and I had to learn how to walk again. I told myself that I wouldn’t continue my life without doing what I was meant to do. I decided to take the leap to pursue my dream of being an artist. Since then, I’ve sold my artwork to over 25 states, three countries and I’ve completed five murals. I’ve also collaborated with NFL & Redbull. My ultimate goal as an artist is to help at-risk youth & women through my artwork, as artwork has helped me in so many ways.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Becoming an artist has been fulfilling but it definitely hasn’t been smooth. There were, and still are, many obstacles, mostly stemming from navigating the business side of selling artwork. I was never taught financial literacy and no one in my family is self-employed, so learning how to do it all with just the internet was challenging.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I enjoy merging realism and surrealism together, it’s become a part of my art style. I work mostly in acrylics but I’m proud to say I’ve been venturing into other mediums such as alcohol markers, pastels and colored pencils. I’m heavily inspired by nature, animals, my womanhood and bright colors. I’m most known for my plant characters and ethereal sceneries.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Aside from being in nature for inspiration, films and books are my go-to. I enjoy sci-fi/fantasy and fiction movies and books. My favorite director is Tim Burton. Anytime I feel uninspired, I put on one of his films. I’m currently reading The Mermaid of Jeju by Sumi Hahn.
