Today we’d like to introduce you to Antoinette Davis.

Hi Antoinette, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sugar Muffins Cupcakes now Sugar Muffins Bake Shop, got its start in 2012 when my husband became ill, I thought that whatever I could do to help him would benefit our family. With a cry to God, I said “Lord I Want To Help My Husband”! God heard my cry and immediately God gave me the idea to start baking! I laughed at the thought of me baking anything because at the time, I could barely cook and was terrified to bake! So I asked a question God if this is you then what am I to bake? Cupcakes came to my heart so I laugh and said God if this is you what kind of cupcake do I bake, I laughed so hard, and if this truly was God what was His response? I hear bake banana pudding cupcakes! OMG! I have never heard of such a flavor in my entire life let alone bake anything for anybody! Well, I looked it up and there it was Banana Pudding Cupcakes Recipe. I had never heard or seen or tasted such a concoction of flavors, the flavor profile alone made me think I must be crazy!

Well, I was hearing correctly, and I’m definitely not insane! So my very first baked good that I created was a banana pudding cupcake in 2012. This banana pudding cupcake is now Sugar Muffins Bake Shop Signature Item! It is baked with heavenly perfection, it has become a staple at all our events and farmers’ markets and we sell out our signature banana pudding every time! If you have a question pray about it, you never know what God may say! I’m just glad I listened and I have been baking ever since! It all started out with just a prayer and an idea, it has now turned into a successful business where we are baking more than cupcakes! Sugar Muffins Bake Shop now bakes cakes, pies, cookies, cheesecakes, artisan bread, donuts, pastries and so much more! Wow! It all started in our 100 square foot kitchen in Atlanta, GA now our products are being shipped around the United States. We have been to many cities with our products and we always sell out of banana pudding! We are known for our cupcakes in a jar! We later moved to Texas and decided that our cupcakes could not stand against the Texas Heat, so we remembered seeing an episode of Shark Tank where a mother and daughter team made cupcakes in a jar! This is such a genius idea, we hear this told to us at each event we attend and we always credit Wicked Good Cupcakes for this idea! Thanks, ladies!

Though being scared to bake, I was reminded of my upbringing! Grandma Hattie Bell was a sought-after chef and pastry chef all throughout her city of Anniston, Alabama! Grandma would get hired every year by the local schools to prepare the holiday feasts, now that was pretty awesome. Grandma had me in the kitchen every chance she would get, of course, I watched most of the time, but I would get a chance to stir the batters and lick the spoon, yum! Each year grandma would make all her loved ones their favorite birthday cake, mine is Lemon! Around the age of 6, my grandmother passed not ever making me another cake or anyone else. I soon learned how to make grandma’s favorite recipes from scratch and my favorite lemon cake! I take real pleasure in knowing that my grandmother left me a legacy of love for cooking and baking. I am now a more confident woman thanks to God and grandma. I took a chance at baking and am now seeing the fruit of my hard work. If you desire something in life, all you have to do is say a prayer close your eyes and go for it! Sugar Muffins got its name from our daughter who at the time was four, her nickname was Sugar Muffins even to this day we still call her that ten years later, she hates it lol but absolutely understands that she is me and her dad’s Sugar Muffin.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road! I didn’t believe in myself at first, my husband became my coach and my biggest encourager, he always believed in me even when I didn’t believe that I could do it. I would try to tackle this business alone because it was my baby, but it became so overwhelming and challenging that it became like a chore, you must accept the help that is available. My family is absolutely the best! They help me with whatever I need, from sales to setups at events to even helping me bake! I have incredible support even some of my friends have come alongside me to make sure I continue to grow and become the best at what I love to do!

I am Antoinette and I am a Professional Chef/Baker with Sugar Muffins Bake Shop in Smyrna, GA. We specialize in handmade from scratch treats for all ages and dietary needs. We cater to everyone! Here at Sugar Muffins Bake Shop, we make vegan, gluten-free, keto, sugar-free, and dairy-free desserts and treats. We make cakes, pies, cheesecakes, cupcakes, cookies, meat pies, cheesecakes in a jar, cupcakes in a jar pies in a jar peach cobbler in a jar, donuts, jalapeno cheddar bread, pepperoni bread, sandwich bread, bundt cakes and much more! I want my customers to experience the same joy I had when I was in that kitchen with my grandma at six years old. I become elated when the first word I hear after tasting our treats is WOW!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
YouTube University has become my favorite, especially during Covid. I think this is the best choice if you want to make sure you stay safe. Networking I usually talk with other professionals in the food industry and we swap ideas, its always great to get around those who do similar things you do, like I love to talk to people who make bagels, I haven’t yet mastered bagels at all but I am inspired, so I would say find something your not great at and find an individual who is doing awesome at it and just shadow them if they let you, but most times they will.
